GROTON, Conn. - Naval Branch Health Clinic (NBHC) Groton is pleased to offer the FluMist nasal-spray vaccine again to beneficiaries. Vaccination with FluMist is recommended for healthy, non-pregnant people ages 2 to 49 years. The nasal-spray flu vaccine is made with live, weakened flu viruses. FluMist has been shown to be 20 to 30 percent more effective than the injectible shot for preventing the flu in children.
The traditional flu shot injection will be given to children age 6 months to 2 years, adults 50 years and older, pregnant women and patients with chronic medical conditions.
Walk-in seasonal flu vaccines are available through Oct. 23 for patients enrolled in Tricare Prime at Naval Branch Health Clinic Groton (across from Laboratory) from 1 to 3 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays and 7:30 to 9 a.m., Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Flu vaccine clinics
A special walk-in seasonal flu clinic will be offered for Tricare Prime Patients enrolled at Naval Branch Health Clinic, Groton, Oct. 22 from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., behind the Quarter Deck (next to the coffee stand).
A seasonal flu clinic for all beneficiaries will take place at the Naval Branch Health Clinic, Immunizations Department, Oct. 24 from 9 a.m. to noon.
If you want to get vaccinated in town an authorization is not required if the vaccine is given by a Tricare-authorized provider. The patient should ask (prior to receiving the vaccine) if the provider is Tricare authorized.
If not, the patient can call Healthnet Federal Services (877) TRICARE / (877) 874-2273) or log on to www.healthnetfederalservices.com, to find an authorized provider.
Flu shots or nasal spray flu vaccine (Flu Mist) are not covered by Tricare when provided at a civilian pharmacy or drug store.
If a patient goes to an urgent care facility for a flu vaccine, they may need an authorization if the facility bills it as a new patient visit and vaccine. Only the vaccine is covered when given by an urgent care facility.
