Donald C. Leinen, 87, of Kalona, formerly of Iowa City and Harper, died Saturday, October 17, 2009 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following a lingering illness. Services will be held Thursday, October 22, 2009 at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Richmond with Fr. Rich Adam officiating. Burial will be held later in St. Elizabeth Cemetery in Harper, Iowa. Visitation will be Wednesday, October 21 from 4-7 p.m. at Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona.
Donald C. Leinen was born May 8, 1922 in South English, Iowa, the son of John W. and Anna Britten Leinen. He was a farmer for 48 years, retiring in 1988. He moved to Iowa City in 1989. He was united in marriage to Darlene Steckel on November 29, 1958 in Cedar Rapids. He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and formerly St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church in Harper where he served as an alter boy, sang in choir, ushered, was a trustee and served on the parish council and was a religion education teacher. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and served as Grand Recorder, Deputy Grand Knight, and Grand Knight. He served on the Keota/Harper School Board, volunteered for 2000 plus hours at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, volunteered at free lunch program at Wesley House, and helped rebuild Colonial Lanes Bowling Alley after a tornado. He enjoyed bowling on a Wednesday league. He also enjoyed gardening and playing cards.
He is survived by his wife Darlene Leinen of Kalona; four children: Theresa and husband Rollin Howard III of Sachse, Texas, Leo and wife Theresa Leinen of Kalona, Matthew Leinen of Cedar Rapids, Maria and husband Frank Gonzales of Wylie, Texas; nine grandchildren: Rollin IV, Joshua, Zachary, Jake, Ben, Tom, Emmalee, Brittney and Audrey; siblings: Mary Kay Gerleman of Cedar Rapids, Eva Parrish of Cedar Rapids, Bernadette and husband Wilbert Adam of Keota, Roseanne and husband O.B. Giltner of Fairtown, Ohio, J. Arthur and wife Norma Leinen of Keota, Leon and wife Rose Leinen of West Des Moines; one sister-in-law Jerri Moeller of Davenport.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Jerome Leinen.
A memorial fund has been established for Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
