Local news
L. O'Laughlin, proprietor of the Bon Ton Caf, is taking a few days vacation and is visiting his relatives in Washington. The Misses Belle Dunlap and Violet Troyer are staying in the restaurant during his absence.
J. A. Kirkpatrick has been appointed as Rural Mail Carrier on Route 2, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of O. T. Dunlap.
The Rock Island bridge force are here putting in a steel bridge over the English River west of town. They expect to be here about ten days.
Mr. Stutzman from Millersburg, Ohio, shipped out a good car load of horses from here Tuesday. Among them we noticed a pair of nice ones that he bought of Fred Niffenegger.
A. A. Maas' new house is in the plastering stage now. Perry Dawson is doing the work, began last Monday.
Dan Gingerich has been sawing lumber for Alvin Hasty this week.
F. E. Skola has a new horse and buggy. A good rig and can now go and come as he pleases.
Amos Sleichter and D. J. Fisher left Tuesday for a trip to South Dakota. They will visit friends at Huron, Iriquois and other points and look over the country.
Simon Miller, son of M. D. Miller, who has been working for an uncle near Holdredge, Nebr. Came home Saturday and will spend the winter here. He will return to Nebraska in the spring.
Two of our citizens mixed in a fistic way yesterday afternoon. As is usually the case, booze was the cause of the trouble. Since Marshal Capp resigned, the town has been without a marshal.
George A. Spenner, a well known resident of English River township, was stricken with heart disease, last Saturday, while at the home of his sister, Mrs. S. O. Gringer, and his life had passed away, before he was found. He was born March 5th, 1862, and was past 47 years of age.
Richmond
Mandy Figgins purchased the Wingler property and will take possession March 1.
School will close Friday for a two weeks vacation.
Fred Marhofer and chum from Kalona, attended the dance here Saturday evening.
Joe Freund is doing some tiling for Frank Lintz.
Mrs. Lona Chapek has been seriously sick for the past two weeks at the home of her mother, Mrs. Marhofer in Richmond. Doctors from Iowa City, assisted the local physicians in operating on her Monday.
Wm. Reese is doing some cement work for Fred Radda.
Sharon Center
Mr. and Mrs. John Kinsinger are preparing to move into Eli Stutzman's house west of Sharon.
Mr. and Mrs. Tom Wagner and children and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Meer went to Davenport last Thursday and returned Saturday. They went to Mr. Wagner's auto making the trip in about three and one half hours.
Gid Peterseim is busy improving the roads in No. 4.
Sherman Sleichter and sister Velma of Kalona visited Sunday at Ivan Hummer's.
Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Johnson were Frendale visitors Monday at Fred Kafering's.

On Wednesday evening, October 13, 1909, the marriage of Vella Huntsberger and Mr. Lloyd Maplethorpe, took place at the home of the brides' parents. The bride is the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Huntsberger near Green Valley. The groom is the second son of Mr. W. E. Maplethorpe.
Prairie Dale
The fall term of the Prairie Dale school closed last Friday.
Quite a number of the farmers have commenced to gather corn.
Herman Minecke delivered a horse at Kalona this week.
Pilotburg
Wm. Brown and family have moved in their new home on the Cooper farm.
Newt Noacker and family and B. J. Holmes and wife were visitors at the Otto Patterson home Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. D. P. Brindley are slowly improving. Some of their neighbors went in one day last week and dug their potatoes for them.

Uncle Dan Shaver can claim honor to the distinction of being the oldest printer in the state of Iowa.
Clint Booth has rented Jos. Chalupa's farm east of town for next season. The present occupant, Frank Brown, will move to a farm ear Pilotburg.
Charley Johnson has purchased the Grandma Sigler farm of 120 acres at $120 per acres. This purchase makes Mr. Johnson one of the largest land owners on the south prairie.
The marriage of Mr. Arthur Yoder and Miss Swartzendruber took place at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. J. Swartzendruber. The groom is a son of Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Yoder, and an excellent young farmer, who the past season has been tilling the Chas. Blumenstein's farm.

Mr. and Mrs. Orville Kinsinger of Parnell are the proud parents of a baby daughter, Carolyn Ann, born to them the 14th.
Mr. and Mrs. Benedict Kempf are the proud parents of a son born to them Oct. 11 at their home four miles north of Kalona.
Albert Duwa, southwest of Riverside was injured seriously Wednesday afternoon while in his feed lot on his farm feeding his hogs. It seems that he was attacked by the animals and gotten down. His side and hip was badly torn.
Weller Snyder and O. C. Sjeigleder of the Snair Hardware Co., were in Moline, Illinois last Friday attending a general meeting of dealers who handle the John Deere Line.
The stock and tools of the harness shop of the late Jacob C. Gingerich has been sold to Peter Wittrick of Washington, Iowa who is now in possession.
Mr. Wittrick has rented the Mrs. Edmondson property on West Barnes Street and he and his wife will move to Kalona in about ten days.
Mr. Winborn will be retained and will assist in the shoe and harness repairing.
The town council has voted to circulate petitions among the voters of Kalona for consent to spread gravel on the side streets which have never been covered.
Mrs. Bertha Kepler is reported to be quite ill at this writing. Her daughter, Mrs. Anna Johnson of Minneapolis, Minn. came last Thursday to be with her mother.
Mrs. Roy H. Miller has been on the sick list for the past several days. She was taken to Iowa City for examination Tuesday morning.
Mr. and Mrs. S. W. Yoder accompanied by Miss Chesebro and Miss Nimtz motored to Mt. Pleasant Sunday to visit with Paul Yoder who is attending Iowa Wesleyan College.
John Speas is planning to hold a closing out sale at his farm house northwest of Kalona.
Miss Anna Miller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter B. Miller north of Kalona, will become the bride of Mr. Eli Bontrager today, Oct. 15. The wedding ceremony will be performed at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Dan J. Hershberger near the East Union church.

Mr. and Mrs. Jay Butterbaugh and children attended the funeral of Ed Gosnell at Frytown Sunday.
Leslie Ihrig took a load of stock to Chicago last week for G. E. Hartsock and Raymond Benell. Mr. Hartsock made the trip to Chicago also.
Miss Muriel Smalley and Miss Bonnie Carter attended teacher's meeting in Iowa City Saturday.
Chancey Hershberger has the Tompson Brother's farm rented for another year. The farm is now occupied by Ora Troyer, who bought a farm northwest of Kalona.
Mr. and Mrs. Albert Zager and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sass attended the wedding of their niece, miss Gertrude Roessler to Mr. Vern Sorensen at the Wm. Roessler home in Iowa City.

Cheryl Ann was the name given to the daughter born October 17 to Mr. and Mrs. Ward Liebe Jr.
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Krabill are the parents of a son born October 18. He weighed 6 pounds 6 ounces.
A son weighing 7 pounds 14 ounces was born October 20 to Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Ropp.
A 7 pound 8 ounce daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Mullet on October 20.
Mr. and Mrs. Victor Kropf are the parents of a daughter born October 22. She weighed 6 pounds 10 ounces and was named Arlene Grace.

Wanda, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Shetler underwent adenoidectomy at the Washington hospital today.
Kenneth Moss underwent an appendectomy at the Mercy hospital today.
Arminda Brenneman, daughter of Henry and Anna Swartzendruber Hochstetler was born at Kalona, Iowa, July 17, 1869 and died at the Pleasantview Home in Kalona, October 11, 1959. She was the first guest to enter the Pleasantview Home.
Funeral services for Mrs. I. J. Kelley, 60 were held in Richmond October 22.
Goldie Grady Kelley was born in Kalona January 6, 1893, the daughter of Newell and Anna Strabala Grady. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. M. J. Saforek, Ontario, California; two sons, Lamont and Richard, Kalona.
Mrs. Reese Trusler, who observed her birthday October 19, was honored at a surprise birthday party.
Those sharing the occasion with honoree were Louise Kallaus, Mrs. Chody, Mrs. Don Miller, Mrs. Lyle Fry, Mrs. Vernon Hartzler, Mrs. Loren Spicher and Mrs. Eugene Way.
Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Spenner and Ellen, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Huff of Lone Tree spent the weekend in Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri visiting Wilber Huff and Donald Spenner. The boys will finish their Basic Training Oct. 23.

The town of Kalona has a new patrol car which will be used in patrolling the streets. Delivery was made this week by the Kalona Motor Co.

Third Grade
Eric Shaver brought his stamp collection to show the class. He is anxious to get stamps to add to those he already has. Roy Malichky and Connie Goodlander both brought story books for us to read.
Second Grade
Our snake, "Stripy", escaped this week. We think he wanted a vacation. He was found in the fifth-grade room, safe and sound. We're glad he didn't scare anyone.
Dodge Ball is getting to be a favorite game of ours. Danny Dickel was our "Champion of champions."
This week, the Kittens and the Robins started their new reading books.

Mrs. Joe Fanatia was hostess at a surprise party Saturday evening for Joseph Fanatia's birthday and Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Rotenburger's 35th wedding anniversary, which was October 10.
Richard and Mary Barry of Tempe, Arizona, were Thursday overnight guests at the Maude Kallaus home and left Friday after being here for the funeral of her sister, Pauline Hershberger.

Amber Moomey was a guest of her daughter, Mrs. Clair (Vyrle) Grout on her 94th birthday.
Betty Whitmire's callers were Diane Davisson, Paula Hartley, Ardith Ropp, Mattie and Jenny Hostetler. Betty enjoyed a picnic at the Wellman Park with family and friends Sunday, October 7.
A group of Lizzie Gegenheimer's relatives gathered in her room to observe her 97th birthday October 11. Lizzie has been a resident of Pleasantview for almost eleven years and has witnessed the many changes that have occurred, notably in food service. She recalls the great quantities of food brought in by the farmers, and of joining a group of voluntary workers to prepare it for a meal.
Flint Ridge

A famous basketball team won first place at the annual Kid Tournament which was held in the new Kalona High School gym which is now the Kalona Rec Center.
Players were from the Evergreen-Fairview areas sometime during the mid thirtys.
The players were Daniel Bender, Meredith Maas Jr., Cleo Gingerich, Paul Gingerich, Chester Miller, Leo Miller, Alva Gingerich Jr.
Ray and Elva Troyer have returned to their home in Nampa, Idaho, after spending time with relatives in the Wellman, Kalona and Wayland areas. They are Flint Ridge Boosters and wait at their ol mail box each week to read these lines. Thanks!
Marlo Matthes of Greene Valley, Don Yoder of the Valley, George Yoder of Birch Creek and guest Bob Blumenstein of colorful Colorado met at the Kalonial Townhouse for a six o'clock Breakfast and Quarterly Council Meeting last Saturday morning. Black Diamond Councilman Paul Hannon was absent because of heavy fog in that area. A lot of issues were discussed and passed but a few were tabled because of Paul's absence. However, Mr. Blumenstein's humorous advice sure was appreciated.
Delmar and Goldie Bender up between Pittsburg and Windom, Steve and Paquita Ditzler and family of the Hickory Grove area, Bruce Hochstetler, Mary Slaubaugh, Lester and Carolyn Yoder all of the Upper Deer Creek area met at our place Sunday evening for Little Churches Group.
Last Friday evening Dale and Nina Yoder Ray and Mary Kauffman of Phoenix, Arizona, Don and Ruth Yoder met the Townhouse for an evening dinner and later stopped at Dale Yoder's for a fine visit.
Last winter when we were down in Phoenix we stayed in the Kauffman's upstairs apartments and after we left Dale and Nina stayed there. It sure was good to see Ray and Mary again.
We have been seeing our ol buddy Cleo Kessler up at the Iowa games and it is good to see Cleo again as he also is a Flint Ridge Booster from up beyond solon.

M-P Football
The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks snapped their losing streak Friday when they won over Clear Creek 20-12. Scott Barthelman, Pat Woodburn and Scott Bell all made touchdowns for the high-flying Hawks and Woodburn returned a kickoff for a score with Bell running 14 yards for the winning score.
The coach also cited efforts by Steve Schrepfer who completed seven passes and defenders Todd Bontrager, John Schrock, Todd Kiefer and Robert Murphy.
