Mid-Prairie blockers try to get their hands on a ball tipped by a Regal player during action in Iowa City on October 8, 2009.
The Mid-Prairie ladies took it to a tie-breaker against the Regals of Regina on Thursday evening, October 8, in the first round of the Cedar Valley Conference Volleyball tournament in Iowa City.
After losing the first game 25-17, the Mid-Prairie girls dug down deep and got to work.
In the second game, The Hawks took an early lead, getting four consecutive serves from freshman Olivia Lugar to take a 6-3 lead. The Hawks got a pair of aces from freshman Mallory McArtor and senior Kelsey Fuhr and extended their lead to 10-5 before the Regals bounced back to tie the game 11-11.
The Golden Hawks and Regals battled back and forth, staying knotted through 19-19 before the Golden Hawks got a pair of kills from Lugar and one from senior Kendra Kramer to go up 23-20. Powerful hitter Kelsey Fuhr ended the game with an exclamation point, killing the ball straight down into the ground at the middle of the net for a 25-22 second-game M-P win.
In the third game, the Golden Hawks dropped behind 0-5 before fighting back and tying the game at 10-10 on an ace from senior setter Kate Yoder. The teams battled to a 23-23 tie before Regina got what they needed when senior hitter #6 Jordyn Akers rotated into the front row to put the game away, 25-23.
In the fourth game, The Golden Hawks stormed out to a 4-0 lead, getting a kill from Kelsey Fuhr and an ace from senior back row specialist Kelsey Berg. Regina battled back to make it a 4-4 game and the teams remained tied through 8-8, before Kendra Kramer knocked down consecutive kills for an 11-9 Mid-Prairie lead. The Regals battled back again - and the teams locked scores at 12-12 and traded serves though a 24-24 tie. After a Regina error, the Golden Hawks got the break they needed, when Lugar aced her serve to give M-P the two-point 26-24 win.
The match came down to the tie-breaker, with the M-P and Regina girls battling to a 12-12 tie before the Regals got Akers in the front row again and put things away 15-13.
