"Southeastern Connecticut raised more than 388,000 dollars last year with only 22 percent participation across the region," said SUBASE Executive Officer, Commander Daniel Rossler. "This year's goal is to reach out to the other 80 percent."
Representatives from Big Brothers and Big Sisters, the New London Women's Center, Donnas' Place, the United Way and Covenant Shelter of New London were on hand to inform those in attendance of the importance of the CFC.
"I encourage everyone to donate to a worthy cause, especially the United Way," said guest speaker Janet D. Pearce from Covenant Shelter of New London. "They provide so much help to those in need in Connecticut."
This year's campaign slogan is "I can." I can, make a difference, help a child, plant a tree, feed the hungry, save a species, rescue a friend, find a cure.
The CFC gives Sailors the chance to donate money to causes that may be close to their hearts, like cancer research, autism research, wildlife conservation, fine arts like dance and music, finding cures for childhood illnesses, or even helping to fund the dreams of Olympic hopefuls.
"It doesn't matter how much you give," said Southeastern Connecticut CFC director Stephanie P. Brown. "Whether it's a dollar, or a hundred dollars, as long as you decide to give."
