Afrikan Poetry Theatre hosts weekend events

   The Afrikan Poetry Theatre, Inc. will host a weekend of jazz, poetry and a film about African culture entitled “Sankofa,” starting next Friday.
   On Oct. 16 at 7:30 p.m. the theater presents Friday Night at the Movies when the film will be shown free of charge. Sankofa is an Akan term meaning reclaim the past in order to go forward. Discussion of the film will folow after the screening.

   The smooth sound of jazz will fill the air on Oct. 17 at 8 p.m. as the Jazz Educational Concerts presents Tulivu Dona Cumberbatch and Company. The jazz singer, whose African name, Tulivu, translates to beautiful in Swahili, has been compared to Ella Fitzgerald and Aretha Franklin.
   Special guest poet and performer Lisa Muhammad is also expected to be in attendance. Advance tickets are $15 and tickets at the door are $17.
   On Sunday, Oct. 18 at 3 p.m. noted scholar Dr. Molefi Kete Asante will discuss meetings held with the African Union. Presented by the National Association of Kawaida Organization, this discussion will highlight a Pan African report on the African Union and the United States of Africa.
