WEST HARTFORD - Police say they have traced two shoplifting cases at local CVS stores to a criminal operation reselling stolen goods on eBay.
In a joint effort by West Hartford police detectives and CVS loss prevention investigators, Dana Giacobini, 41, of 28 Wesley St., Waterbury, was identified as the thief in the summer shoplifting incidents, police said.
A search warrant executed on her apartment revealed an entire room devoted to a resale business, with a computer, shipping equipment, 40 boxes ready to be sent to customers and more than $25,000 worth of merchandise, Sgt. Frank Fallon said, including lip balm, nail polish, perfume and blood pressure cuffs. The day after her arrest, police were still processing evidence from her apartment.
"It looked like a little mini mall," Fallon said.
Over the last two and a half years, he said, more than $170,000 worth of merchandise was sold on her eBay account, though how much of that was made from selling ill-gotten goods is unknown.
"It is hard to say exactly how much (was stolen), but that was her M.O.," Fallon said.
Giacobini had two warrants for her arrest for shoplifting, one at a location on Boulevard and the other on South Main Street CVS, from June 30 and July 1. Arrested last week and charged with third- and fourth-degree larceny, she is being held on $95,000 bond and is due in court Nov. 2.
Police said the investigation is ongoing and an additional arrest warrant is expected to follow.
