UNIONTOWN - The trial of Lawrence County's former assistant technology director on charges of embezzlement in Fayette County is scheduled to begin early next month.

Carl Paul Lewis, 54, formerly of 3371 Shaffer Road, Slippery Rock Township, is accused of stealing $141,000 from the Bullskin Township/Connellsville Township Joint Sewerage Authority between mid-2005 and September 2007, while he was the agency's executive director.

Lewis worked for Lawrence County from Jan. 2, 2008, until last April, when he was charged in Fayette County. At that time, Lewis was placed on unpaid administrative leave.

Lewis' trial is scheduled to begin Nov. 2 before Fayette County Judge Steve Leskinen.

Lawrence County Human Resources Director Karen King was off work Friday and unavailable for comment. County Commissioner Dan Vogler said he could not confirm that Lewis had been fired, but did confirm the county had hired a replacement assistant technology director, in spite of an ongoing hiring freeze.

During his time working for Lawrence County, Lewis worked with numerous computer programs used to record financial accounts, but county officials said he never personally handled public funds.

State police said Lewis made unauthorized payments to himself out of the sewer authority's account and stole cash from payments made at the authority's offices.

According to documents filed with the office of District Judge Ronald Haggerty of Connellsville, Lewis told police that he took the money to help a girlfriend who had become addicted to drugs.

The thefts were discovered when the sewer authority's financial records were audited for the years 2005-07.
Dan Webster of Uniontown, Lewis' attorney, had no comment on the case.

In a preliminary hearing May 16, Lewis was ordered held for court. He has been held in Fayette County Prison on $150,000 bond since the charges were filed.
