The school board approved the 2009-2010 proposed budget of $13,749,018 in expenditures and $13,709,650 in revenues, with the difference being taken from various fund balances. The levy amount is $6,431,265, so the mill rate is 9.0820, or about a $60 increase on a $100,000 home from last year's 8.4717 mill rate and $6,002,310 tax levy. "There was a 10.3-percent decrease in state aids, though," explained Superintendent Al Brown, who also explained the enrollment report. Student enrollment in Chetek is down from 1,050 students in 2006 to 1,002 in 2008 and 986 in 2009. The high school was predominantly affected because the 2009 graduating class had 90 students and the 2009-2010 freshman class only has 65. Overall, enrollment decreased by 16 students from last year's numbers. "It may seem like we have a larger budget for fewer enrolled students, but this year's budget includes extra money, like the PEP grant, that we didn't have last year and that are for certain areas of education," he continued. "Costs of running the buildings go up each year, as well." Comparatively, Brown stated, the expenditures per student in Chetek is less than the state average. There was also a 3-percent increase in federal support through stimulus funds, which means 8 percent of Chetek's budget is funded by federal money. The final budget will be available Oct. 15, said Brown. Other resolutions approved by the school board were to fix the salaries and mileage of the members (president receives $1,050; clerk and treasurer receive $1,000; and others receive $950) and the sale of any property (desks, chairs, office equipment, etc.) belonging to and not needed by the district. The treasurer's report for the school year that ended June 30 was that revenues were $12,438,890 and expenditures totaled $12,403,543. The cash and investment balances totaled $449,325. Accounts receivable and payable totaled $2,954,368 and $466,744, respectively, as of June 30. The district's indebtedness on long-term loans as of June 30 were $8,085,817 with scheduled maturities extending to the year 2023. In the regular school board meeting, Ken Jost presented a facility committee report asking for authorization of roof maintenance and repair. The board authorized up to $50,000 for immediate repairs, and in February, the committee will present a plan to fix the rest of the roof. Following a closed session, the school board approved the employment of Candace Hodgson, Erica Olson, Gayle Timo, Kayln Sever and Halley Cagle, all as day care workers; Joy Ebben, PEP grant evaluator; and Sarah Anderson, PEP grant dietitian. In other news, the board approved the Nov. 3 referendum question to be as follows: Shall the School District of Chetek and the Weyerhaeuser School District consolidate into a single school district, effective July 1, 2010?
