School board looks at energy savings

The Mid-Prairie Community School Board approved an energy audit during its Monday meeting. The contract is with Exultant Energy Consultants (EEC) of Iowa City for $13,000.
The firm will look at utility usage and propose possible energy-efficient improvements at the Middle School, High School and elementary schools in Wellman and Kalona.
Superintendent Mark Schneider said the evaluation at the high school comes at a good time as the building's steam boiler is almost 50 years old and should be replaced next summer. The unit ventilators in each classroom are also almost 50 years old and could need replaced, which could reach a combined heating system cost of close to $1 million.
The energy report will see if it is practical to use geothermal heat for the high school.
Schneider said that EEC is a new company and one of its co-owners, Mike Donnelly, is an area resident. The price quoted by EEC is about one-third of that quoted by another company in the spring. EEC is looking to do local jobs at a lower rate as a way to build its reputation.
The board went on to approve an agreement with Kid's Country Club for preschool space and administrative services. Last year's contract was for $5,135 for one, half day section. This year will be for a full day at $10,270.
Five grant applications were approved that will be sent to the Washington County Riverboat Foundation. They were:
* A $31,586 grant request for High School Safety and Security - 11 indoor cameras and electronic door locks. Total project cost is $38,648.
* An $8,000 grant request for Connecting Schools to the Community Through Technology- total project cost $9,500.
* An $18,330 grant request for Engaging Students with Interactive technology - total project cost $22,830.
* A $65,270 grant request for Kalona Elementary Playground Improvement Project -Phase II. Total project cost $130,476.
* An $80,000 grant request for Washington County Libraries Connect - total project cost $80,000.
The board approved a new contract for Derek Roberts as eighth grade girls basketball coach at $1,884, replacing Sarah Puttman whose salary was $2,185.
