DNR stocks area ponds with catfish
By: 09/28/2009
HARLAN -- It was only a few weeks ago that a youngster pulled a six-pound catfish out of Spearing Park's pond. Just goes to show that the Iowa Department of Natural Resource's program to stock area lakes and ponds throughout the state is paying dividends. The DNR was in Harlan and Shelby County again this week for its every-two-year fish stocking program, providing catfish to Spearing Park Pond, Pioneer Park Pond and Little George Lake's waters in Harlan, as well as to the water at Nishna Bend at Corley and to Manteno Lake northwest of Earling. Above, Brian Hayes, Fisheries Biologist with the DNR, stocks Spearing pond with roughly 50 new catfish that were raised at the Rathbun Hatcheries at Lake Rathbun. Hayes said sometimes local residents don't know about the stocking program, which provides quality fish for fishing enjoyment in local waters. (Photos by Bob Bjoin)
