Tuesday's accident east of Madison involving two Kenworth semis involved one driver under the influence of alcohol.
Dennis Grocott, 70, of Humboldt, was arrested for driving under the influence and cited for operating a commercial vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration greater than .04. Scott Knisley of the South Dakota Highway Patrol said Grocott's exact blood alcohol level was unavailable, but did say it exceeded the legal limit of .08.
Grocott was driving a Kenworth tractor trailer combination for Myrl & Roy's Paving Company. At 9:11 a.m. Grocott was traveling south on Co. Rd. 29, stopped at the stop sign and proceeded across SD-34.
Andrew Poncelet, 24, of Madison, was heading east on SD-34 with a full load of corn for the Madison Farmers Elevator in a 2000 Kenworth. Knisley said Poncelet observed Grocott crossing the highway, and applied the brakes, but he was unable to stop and collided the trailer.
Neither driver was injured in the accident and seat belts were worn. Had Grocott's trailer been full, Knisley said, the accident would have been worse.
Damage to the Myrl & Roy's trailer was estimated at $10,000. Estimated front-end damage to the Madison Farmers Elevator semi was $25,000.
