Election will remain local

With many volitale issues in town and an odd-numbered year that brings no races on the state level, this November will be all about the municipal elections.

Voters will be choosing among candidates for mayor, the Town Council, and Board of Education, plus the fire commissioner and constables. There are no ballot questions to decide this year.
Republican Mayor Jeff Wright will be going for another term, while Thomas Bowen, Democratic minority leader on the council, will be challenging him on the Democratic ticket.
Each party will have five candidates for the Town Council, with the top eight vote-getters being elected to office. Democratic incumbents Kristine Nasinnyk, Myra Cohen (who switched parties earlier this year), and Christopher Banach are running for new terms. Rounding out the ticket are Maureen Klett and Scott McBride. Klett is a former Board of Education member, who took two years off before deciding to run for the council.
For the Republicans, incumbents John "Jay" Bottalico, Tony Boni, Mike A. Lenares, and David Nagel are running again. Meg Casasanta, who currently serves on the Board of Education, is running for the Town Council this year as well.
For the Board of Education, each party also has five candidates, with the top nine vote-getters elected to serve. Republican incumbents Daniel Carson, who is the current board chairman, Beth DelBuono, Nancy Petronio, and Mary Niro are running. New on the ticket is Philip Bucchi, who hasn't served in any town office.
The Democrats also have four Board of Education incumbents running, Marc Finkelstein, Pamela Raynock, Sharon Braverman, and Stephen Woods, plus new candidate Clarke Castelle.
Both parties in the mayoral and council races will likely focus on the direction downtown revitalization should take.
The Newington Town Crier will feature profiles and photographs of the candidates as Election Day gets closer.
