Belattis are DSU parade marshals
09/23/2009
Dr. Richard and Marilyn Belatti
Dr. Richard and Marilyn Belatti have been chosen as grand marshals of Dakota State University's Trojan Days Parade.

The Belattis will lead the parade, which begins at the south end of Egan Avenue at 10 a.m. Saturday. The parade is part of the annual Trojan Days Homecoming festivities this week.

DSU President Doug Knowlton commended the Belattis for their service to the state, community and DSU.

"Both Dr. Belatti and Marilyn have given a lifetime of serving others -- Dr. Belatti through his work as a physician and in public service, and Marilyn through her dedication to the education field. Their commitment to Dakota State University has remained strong over the years, as friends and donors."

Marilyn Belatti received her degree from University of South Dakota. She taught in Omaha prior to moving with her family to South Dakota. She also spent several years teaching remedial reading in Chester and music at St. Thomas School in Madison. She and her husband have four children.

Dr. Belatti is a retired physician. He earned his bachelor's degree from the College of St. Thomas and a second bachelor's degree in medicine from USD. He received his doctor of medicine degree from Creighton University in 1956. After a 3-year residency in anesthesiology at the Mayo Clinic, Belatti returned to work at Sioux Valley Hospital (now Sanford) in Sioux Falls. He also worked at the Veterans Hospital in Sioux Falls.

He has served in both chambers of the South Dakota Legislature, representing Dist. 13 as a state senator (1989-92) and Dist. 8 as a state representative (1995-98). He served on the South Dakota Board of Regents from 2003-09.

Belatti is active in Rotary, Knights of Columbus and the American Legion. He also served for a time on the Madison School Board.
