Dakota State University kicked off its homecoming celebration with coronation on Monday night. Crowned as king and queen were Josh Thomas and Tiffany Nelson.
Thomas is a sophomore elementary education major from Brookings. He is involved in the Student Activities Board, intramurals and South Dakota Education Association's student program. He was nominated by the Student Activities Board.
Nelson is a senior elementary education/special education major from Arlington. She has been involved in the SAB, InterVarsity, intramurals and SDEA's student program. She was nominated by SDEA.
The two were among 12 candidates for king and 16 candidates for queen. Elections were held last week to narrow the contestants to five candidates each. Other nominees were Sean Aman, Jordan Frisch, Jordan Lindgren, Joel Massen, Kayla Fiedler, Kari Michel, Sara Olson and Ashley Place.
Homecoming events will take place all week and lead up to the parade on Saturday at 10 a.m. Floats will begin at the south end of Egan Avenue and head north. Float judging takes place Friday at 6 p.m.
Other events this week include:
-- Movie night on Tuesday at West Twin Theaters.
-- An eating contest at 12:15 p.m., a cake decorating contest and an open mic "Gong Show" at 7:30 p.m., all on Wednesday.
-- XBOX 360 Domination Extreme from 3-9 p.m. at the Trojan Center marketplace on Thursday, followed by a dance from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the Dakota Prairie Playhouse.
-- A 12:15 p.m. pep rally at the Trojan Center on Friday.
Sports activities include volleyball on Thursday against Dickinson State University and Friday against Minot State University; and football on Friday against Black Hills State University.
Theme days include super hero Tuesday, bandana Tuesday, jersey Thursday and ultimate DSU Day on Friday.
