The stork visited three homes in the Kalona vicinity this week. They are as follows: A son born to Mr. and Mrs. Fay Rowe, Sept. 13, On Sept. 14 a son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Ropp. The son will answer to the name of Chester J.
Annie Margaret is the name of the new daughter born to Mr. and Mrs. Noah M. Yoder Sept. 14.
Eugene, the five year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Hershberger, swallowed a nail with which he was playing while lying on the Davenport at home about two weeks ago. After sixteen days the nail was passed.
Amos Hostetler returned home Saturday from the University Hospital.
Wm. Hesselschwerdt was taken to the University Hospital in Iowa City last week for treatment. He underwent an operation Friday. His daughter, Mrs. Marie Sykes of Altoona, Iowa has been with him.
James, the little son of Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Redlinger, of near Washington met with a serious accident Monday evening while being at the home of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Pieper, south of Kalona.
A kettle of newly made hot soap had been set on a box in the yard to cool when it upset on him and burned him badly.
The young son of Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Miller is reported to be very ill with pneumonia.
Wm. Stumpf, son of George Stumpf met with a peculiar accident Tuesday afternoon when he was splitting wood with a steel maul and wedge. A chip of steel flew from the wedge into the muscle in the calf of his leg burying itself deep in the flesh.
Mrs. Ed Kern entertained at a birthday party Monday afternoon from four until six, for her daughter, Neia, who was six years old Sunday. The pupils of the second grade, their teacher, Miss Mary Pence, Mary Colleen and Alfred Dean Grady and Richard Kelley were present.
Mrs. Anna J. Yoder was pleasantly surprised Monday evening when the following guests came to help her celebrate her birthday. They were the Misses Lena, Katie and Clara Yoder, Mary Ann Miller, Naomi Dickel, Blanche Ropp and Fannie Eimen.
A basket dinner was given for Miss Kate Gingerich Sunday at her home in honor of her birthday.
The Ralph Moody family moved into the A. J. Gingerich property Wednesday which was recently vacated by J. F. O'Loughlin family when they moved into their new home east of the park. The Moody's moved from the Adams property in the north part of town in which Mr. and Mrs. Reagan Adams will move in.
L. E. Southwick, Bert, and Hazel, have gone to Fort Madison to operate a skating rink there. They have closed the rink here.
The new concrete bride on Highway 22 in the Northwest part of town is finished and soon will be filled with dirt and ready for the grading.
A new produce company will open in the south room of the Farmers Store building across the street from the Post Office next week according to information received. It will be operated by C. C. Miller and A. F. Stoltzfus.
Drs. Oldaker and Michum advise us that they have taken over the Dr. L. W. Marner veterinary practice at Wellman.

Glen Sakulin has a very sore finger which he pinched while changing a tire.

Leo Sharp returned home last Tuesday from the S.U.I. hospital.

Clarence Lukavsky helped Joe Liska cut corn fodder last week.

Yesterday occurred the funeral of our neighbor, Homer Turnipseed, who died after an illness of about two weeks, at the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines. He leaves his wife and four children, Betty, Richard, Wayne and Clarabell who is only three years old. He was a loving father to the two step-daughter, Lucille and Janette Wade. He was 47 years old.
Folks are cutting corn fodder for feed. Rudolph Whitmire and Fred Chalupa are helping Glen Chalupa to cut the corn off their contracted acres. It is very green and they are hoping it will not spoil and mold.
The carpenters are busy repairing the machine shed on the Albert Stransky farm where John Lang lives.

H. J Myers had a calf crippled on the highway last week. It had to be killed.

Miss Irene Fishburn returned home last week from Des Moines where she has been employed.

7th and 8th Grade Notes
Since we wanted a club it was necessary to have a president, a secretary, etc. So we elected Marvin Gingerich as president, Richard Snodgrass as vice-president, and Norma Erickson as secretary. The three got together and elected Donald Hesselschwerdt, Robert Swartzendruber and Virginia Peterseim, the program committee.

Mr. and Mrs. Merton Scalf of Wellman are the parents of a daughter born Saturday September 19 at the Washington hospital. Mrs. Scalf is the former Lydia Rhodes.
Mr. and Mrs. Roger Altenhofen of near Kalona are the parents of a daughter, Debbie Ann, born September 26 in Iowa City. She weighed 7 pounds, 12 oz. The maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Lamont Kelley of Kalona and the paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Altenhofen of Washington.
Mr. and Mrs. Harvey J. Miller of Kalona observed their 54th wedding anniversary on Monday, September 21.
Mr. and Mrs. Emil Schlabaugh and sons entertained at a birthday dinner Sept. 25 honoring the eighth birthday of Steven Schlabaugh. Attending were Mr. and Mrs. Mahlon Schlabaugh and Gladys.
H. V. Beck, V. D. Hochstetler, H. L. Walker, C. C. Shimon, Lester Speas, Floyd Walker, Delmar Schlabaugh, Gene Hartzler and Raymond Yotty attended the Washington County Firemen's Association meeting recently.
Whenever you see Bob Southwick tip a bottle you can be sure that he will take a good look before placing it to his lips. While waiting for part of the job to cool Bob reached for the bottle of Coke, but instead he picked up a bottle of sulphuric acid. Bob received severe lip burns and he had several spots inside his mouth.
Kalona High
Victory Field was rightly named so after Friday nights contest between the West Chester Trojans and the Kalona Kubs, leaving the Kubs on top 13-0.
Marvin Eimen and Jim Yoder were the livewires of the Kubs offense with 97 and 95 net yards, respectively. Harold Stout and Steve Reif demonstrated throughout the game the importance and necessity of good blocking and tackling.
Richmond
William C. Chapek, 81, owner and manager of a grocery store in Richmond for 65 years before his retirement a year ago, died at his home early Sunday morning, September 27, 1959.
Surviving him are his wife Anna, his two sons, Robert and Paul of Richmond, his daughters.
Henry Francis TeBockhorst, 81, died in his sleep September 24, 1959, at his home on route one Washington. Death was due to a heart attack.
Survivors include four daughters: Mrs. William Bruty, and Muriel TeBockhorst of Washington, Mrs. Ardell Peiper, Richmond, and Mrs. Lloyd Graham, Clinton, five sons: Aelred and Paul of Washington, Omer of Moline, Firmin of Fairfield and Lyle of Davenport.

Paul Jr. and Lola McAndrew of Urbandale are parents of a daughter, Rose Marie, born Wednesday, September 19. She weighed 7 lbs. 15 ½ oz. and was welcomed home by two sisters, Stephanie and Susan. Grandparents are Paul Sr. (Doc) McAndrew of Missouri and Virginia McAndrew of Kalona and Ervin and Jennis Miller of Kalona.
Craig and Mary Goettsch of Des Moines are parents of a 6 lb. 4 oz. daughter, Laura Catherine, born September 20. She was welcomed by a sister, Sarah. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Warren Schaefer of Kalona and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Goettsch of Davenport. Mr. and Mrs. V. D. Hochstetler are great-grandparents.

The Iowa Mennonite School soccer team had a busy week, playing in four games on two separate occasions. They played Scattergood at home Tuesday, September 18, beating them 9-0. The offense was led by Jeff Gingerich and Kenton Bohn, who each scored two goals. Tony Miller, Tim Miller, Lance Miller and Andy Blauvelt also had one goal each in the contest. Key interceptions were by Clint Gingerich, Jeff Gingerich and Steve Dachtler. Kevin Kemp came off the bench to contribute eight interceptions. Jeff Gingerich led the team in goal attempts with eight, followed by Kenton Bohn with five. Tim Miller led the defense with ten tackles, followed by Darin Hochstetler and Jeff Gingerich with 7 tackles each.
M-P news
The Mid-Prairie FFA chapter sent a judging team to the Iowa Cattle Congress Saturday, September 3.
Team members were Gary Marner, Mike Swartzendruber and graduate Merle Slabaugh. Sam Bontrager was alternate and Todd Townsend and Jim LeFever attended for Mid-Prairie.
M-P Sophomore Football
Defensively the Hawks were very strong against Durant, and defensive coach Phil Conaway did an excellent job. M-P allowed only 49 yards on the ground and 14 yards in the air. Both Darin Yoder and Tom Miller made interceptions. Jason Dumont, Charlie Gingerich, Alan Lovetinsky and Tony Groff turned in good performances.
