Featured this year is the Kalona Depot, built in 1879 when the Burlington, Cedar Rapids and Northern Iowa route came to Kalona. It served as a depot and living quarters for the depot agent until rail service ended in Kalona in 1968.
Local citizens raised the money to save the depot and moved it to the Historic Village in 1979.
Kalona Postmaster Gaye Walton said we will again offer a special souvenir pictorial postmark to commemorate the 130th anniversary of the Kalona Depot, built to accommodate the Burlington, Cedar Rapids & Northern Iowa Route in 1879. There will be two postmarks -- one for each day of the Kalona Fall Festival, Sept. 25 and 26.
A special section on the 2009 Fall Festival will be in next week's edition of The Kalona News - courtesy of area advertisers.
