MONROE - Monroe will host its fourth annual Wellness Fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, September 26, at Masuk High School. The event, which is open to everyone, provides free health screenings and a wealth of answers to physical fitness questions.
A town-wide committee started the fair four years ago to provide employees with an opportunity to improve or maintain their health.
Interest in the event spread and it soon outgrew its original location and moved to Masuk High School. The school also provides smaller rooms for private screenings.
Preventative care can save lives. Organizer Catherine Fanucchi discovered the benefits of early detection when a screening at the wellness fair detected breast cancer.
This year's goal is to provide more screenings because too many people do not have medical insurance in the current economy.
Mammogram screenings are available by appointment. Interested attendees must register before September 22 by calling 203-576-5500. Those without insurance may qualify for free mammograms and should ask when they call.
The Masons are sponsoring child identification packs (CHIPS). Parents receive a Purple Package that includes the child's fingerprints, tooth prints and a DNA sample.
The Monroe Lions Club is providing its Lions Eye Health program that tests for glaucoma and examines peripheral vision.
Belltone of Trumbull is offering earwax screenings. Allergy and Asthma of Monroe will test for dust mites.Intrinsic Health Source of Monroe will offer free, five-minute reflexology sessions.

AEON Physical Therapy is offering age-appropriate sports fitness screenings to youths, adults and seniors.
Dance Workshop is holding a zumba workshop.
Some of Monroe's own town departments are offering wellness screenings. EMS is doing blood pressing screenings.
The Edith Wheeler Memorial Library is offering health literature packages and plans to raffle off gently used books.
Other participating businesses include Main Street Family Chiropractic, My Yoga Place, Amber Jewelry World, Mary Kay Cosmetics, Comfort Keepers, the Jewish Home for the Elderly, Salon Aponte and Natural Neighborhood, super food distributor for Elements for Life, Inc.
Other attractions include face painting for kids, raffles and demonstrations.
"Everyone feels the quality of the vendors is really good. We offer a great variety of services and literature," said Ms. Fanucchi.
The event is self-funding and a group of dedicated volunteers has done all of the work. They use money raised from vendor fees to pay for advertising and necessary equipment such as tables.
All attendees can bring a donation of food or money for the food pantry.
The event is rain or shine and parking is free at the high school.
