Local news
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Strabala are the parents of a nice little boy, born September 17.
Miss Emma Knotek and Mr. John Frank of Riverside, were married Tuesday.
Two of Wellman's young people, Miss Ona Longwell and Loran Bidwell, were united in marriage Wednesday evening.
Christian J. Miller was born in Pennsylvania, August 18, 1844. Departed this life, Sept. 13, 1909, aged 65 years. December 15, 1864 he was married to Catherine Gingerich, to this union were born 10 children, 1 son and 9 daughters.
Miss Belle Dunlap is working in the Bon Ton Restaurant while Miss Elsie Snider takes a vacation.
Mrs. Friese went to Cedar Rapids, Saturday evening, where she met Mr. Friese, who was returning home from a trip to South Dakota.
The J. W. Cupp family have moved into the new shop, where they will live until they can have their house moved in from the country and fitted up for their new home.
L. W. Brooke is tearing down the old creamery building, at the west end of Barnes street and will erect a dwelling house on the ground thus vacated.
Miss Nita Edmondson went to Burlington, Monday evening, where she will attend Elliots business college.
S. F. Gingerich, a member of the faculty of Goshen College of Goshen, Indiana, visited with his folks here last week.
I. N. Arnold left Monday evening for Sioux City, Iowa, where he will attend the national Beekeepers Convention.
Chris D. Hochstetler and wife of Lagrange Co., Indiana, came Friday for a visit at the home of his uncle, B. J. Hochstetler.
D. J. Fisher and Fred Gungerich left Monday evening for Fisher, Illinois, where they will attend a conference of the Mennonite church.
John J. Shetler returned Tuesday, from visiting his brothers, Joe at Bayport, Michigan, and Daniel at Pigeon, Mich. He reports both families nicely located and doing well. A pleasant incident of his visit, was the marriage of his niece, Emma, the eldest daughter of Daniel J. Shetler, to a Mr. Swartzendruber.
Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Yoder and two children left today for their home in Centralia, Missouri, after a two weeks visit with Mr. Yoder's father, Noah Yoder, and at the home of his sister, Mrs. Ed Miller. They also visited Mrs. Miller's mother, Mrs. Miller, who has been quite sick at the J. D. Hershberger home.
Geo. Stumpf, Dan Bopp and Frank Nejedly returned from a trip to South Dakota, Tuesday.
Mrs. Baldwin, of Keswick, came Saturday, to visit her sister, Mrs. A. A. Maas, of Sharon township.
J. W. Carpenter writes that he has made a deal for a tract of land in western Nebraska, and will not be home for another month. This makes a vacancy in the office of janitor at the school house.
Tom Brewer brought in some samples of corn, plucked from the field of John B. Hochstetler, that are fine, good enough for any year.
Frank Friese brought back some samples of corn from South Dakota, and while they don't come up to our Iowa corn, they show that Dakota is the in the corn belt.
Tedford Bros. sold Frank Nejedly and son Charley a 100 acre improved farm, in Sanborn County, South Dakota, last week, at $35 per acre.
Singmaster's will unload a train load of imported horses at Keota, this week, the 22nd. 200 head of them and they are to have music, two big bands, and a big time over the unusual event.
They say that the Sunday is on the tight at Fairfield. One man was fined $5.00 and costs for selling a dish of ice cream, a week ago last Sunday.
Kalona Public Schools
The public schools have opened this year with an unusually bright prospect. The total enrollment is the largest in the history of the schools.

Local news
Mr. and Mrs. Ora Hochstetler are the parents of a baby boy born, Monday, September 10th.
Lola, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Bontrager met the misfortunate of getting her arm in the wringer last Thursday. It was quite a severe injury.
Several Kalona people called on Amos Hostetler at the S. U. I. hospital in Iowa City Sunday, where he is recovering from a minor operation.
Leo Grecian, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Grecian underwent an operation for the removal of his tonsils and adenoids Friday morning.
Wm. Hesselschwerdt is at the University hospital in Iowa City undergoing medical treatment for a few days.
Mrs. Eli Plank went to Des Moines Wednesday afternoon to visit her husband who is at the Veterans hospital there for treatment. He underwent a surgical operation Monday.
Jacob C. Gingerich, one of the well known business men of Kalona, who has been owner, manager and operator of his harness and shoe repair shop here, passed away at his home in Kalona last September 6th at the age of 74 years.
The dogs of Roy Oakes, Weldon Yoder, Ben Boone and Ed Kern, all were poisoned. Ben Boone's dog died while the rest were taken in time to save them.
Quite a lot of moving was scheduled for last week which was carried through as follows: Cecil Randell and family moved from the property in which they lived this summer to the Adams property in the west part of town recently vacated by Mr. and Mrs. Harry Horesowsky.
Mr. and Mrs. Ed Shetler and family moved to Wellman from the Grout property in the west part of town. Mr. and Mrs. Noah Rowe moved into the place which was vacated by the Shetler's.
Walter Speas moved from the Lester Kline property in the north part of town to rooms in the Mrs. A. N. Grady flat, while Mr. and Mrs. Kline moved into their property from Oskaloosa where they had lived the past five years.
Mr. and Mrs. J. F. O'Loughlin are moving to their new home east of the town park which they purchased of Koloseik Brothers early last spring. They have rebuilt it and made it new and modern.
Relief work on the local project began Monday with seven men on the job. Eight hour days is the schedule set, working three days a week. The rate of pay is 30 cents per hour and paid by check.
Vernon Gingerich, son of Mrs. Lydia Gingerich is suffering from a broken collar bone which he received while practicing football Monday evening.
Mrs. H. V. Snodgrass and daughter, Helen, also Weldon Yoder motored to Mt. Pleasant Monday morning. Helen remained there and will attend Iowa Wesleyan College this year.
Glen Guengerich left Monday for Goshen, Indiana where he will attend college.
Richmond
Sunday September 9th marked the Golden Wedding Anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Welte which was celebrated at their home in Richmond, Iowa on that date. Their grandson and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Dale Welte were present and celebrated their first wedding anniversary on the same date.
Before their marriage, Mrs. A. H. Welte was Carolyn Casper, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Casper, Mr. and Mrs. Welte lived in Kalona for five years after their marriage, then moved to Richmond where they now reside. Eight children were born to them, seven of whom are living, namely, Mrs. W. J. Keifer, of Washington, Mrs. Harold Schnoeblen, Mrs. Roy Kallous and Mrs. L.J. Keifer, all of the Richmond community, Leo, Paul and Adrian at home. They have fifteen grandchildren.
Mr. and Mrs. Earl Grady are the parents of a little son born Sept. 6 at the S.U.I. hospital at Iowa City.
Mr. and Mrs. Bert Stumpf have a new baby daughter born Sunday morning, Sept. 9.
Leo Sharp is expected home from the University hospital where he has been the past 6 weeks. His condition is reported good but due to the skin graft, he will be confined to his home.
Evergreen
A large crowd attended the funeral of Jake Gingerich at East Union Sunday.
M. D. Miller has sold the 40 acres three-fourths mile east of East Union church to Joe F. Miller.
A lot of corn fodder is being cut this fall in order to have feed for the livestock this winter, which is rather a serious problem for most of us.
Archie Moore, V. F. Moore, F. L. and Maggie Snider and Willard Gingerich threshed broom corn at Willard Gingerich's last Friday, also Saturday morning.
Lewis Bender and son, Clarence, F. L. Snider, Willard Gingerich, Johnnie Beachy and V. F. Moore helped saw wood for Miss Maggie Snider Saturday.
Mr. and Mrs. John R. Knepp and family, Veda, Lyda, and Ada Rhodes took dinner at the Ivan Rhodes home in Wellman Sunday.
Ezra Miller delivered hogs to Kalona buyers Monday and had the misfortune of having a hog jump out when about a mile from home.
Several neighbors helped to cut corn fodder at the Mrs. Lena Yoder's Monday.

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hammer, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Hammer and family and Mr. and Mrs. Boyd Gosnell and family attended the Watermelon Festival at Conesville.
A party was held at the Charley Hammer home last Sunday afternoon in honor of Beulah Gosnell's birthday.
Several of the vicinity and neighborhood attended a quilting party at the Glen Fisher home.

Miss Alice Hummer returned to her school work at Mt. Pleasant Thursday, after spending the summer with Mrs. Maas.

Student Council Meeting
The fifth and sixth grades had their first student council meeting. Shirley Boone made a motion that the president should have his place for a month. Ella Gingerich made two motions; one that two playground officers be appointed by the president, and one that the president appoint a housekeeper. Treva Hesselschwerdt made a motion that a librarian be appointed. The following officers were elected;

Center High School Notes

The Senior class has increased one over last year with a total of three. The Junior class has remained the same. The Sophomore class has lost two of its grand total leaving fifteen. Six freshmen have enrolled. They are Lucille Swartzendruber, Dorothy Gingerich, Anna Mae Miller, Lois Erb, Alva Grout, and Karl Stutzman. The total enrollment this year is thirty-one.

Local news
Mr. and Mrs. Keith Pieper of California are the parents of a daughter, Terri Marie born August 14. She weighed nine pounds, eight ounces. Paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Ardell Pieper, Richmond.
A daughter weighing 8 pounds, 15 ounces was born at the Mercy hospital on September 16 to Mr. and Mrs. Lewis W. Yoder.
Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Gingerich of Bovey, Minnesota are the parents of a son born Wednesday, September 16 and weighing eight pounds and one ounce.
Mr. and Mrs. Chris Bontrager returned Monday evening from Hesston, Kansas after visiting in the Keith Miller and Marvin Zook homes. While at the Zook home they helped care for their new granddaughter, Monica Rae born September 1.
The new home of Ed Niffenegger is nearing completion and will be ready for occupancy by October 1. Location of the home is at the south edge of Kalona on the Richmond road.
Mrs. Dessie Figgins has sold her property at the corner of C avenue and 3rd Street to Alvin Miller.
Mr. and Mrs. C. Jay Miller have moved from Frytown to a trailer on a lot near the Kalona Sausage Farm at the south edge of Kalona.
Michael, son of Mr. and Mrs. Warren Mills underwent surgery on Monday of this week.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Guengerich visited their niece Elaine Guengerich at the Mercy hospital.
Mrs. Eli Swartzentruber underwent surgery at the Mercy hospital. She is recovering satisfactorily.
Elaine, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. Glenn Guengerich, is a patient in room 200 at the Mercy hospital.
Mrs. Alvin Sojka underwent surgery at the Mercy hospital in Iowa City.
Richard, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Ropp is a medical patient at the Mercy hospital.
Clifford A. Small, farmer living north of Kalona was painfully injured last Monday afternoon while working in the barn on his farm. He suffered several fractured ribs and bruises and is confined to the Mercy hospital in Iowa City.
Small was attempting to dislodge a hay carrier which was jammed at one end of the barn. Not having a ladder long enough to reach the track, Small was pulled to the roof as he rode the hay fork.
Failing in his attempt to free the carrier, Cliff was being lowered to the floor of the barn when the carrier gave way and started to roll along the track. Since Cliff was partially lowered, his body struck a large beam and then slammed against the opposite side of the barn. He was taken to the hospital by ambulance and will be confined for some time.
Richmond
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Welte Sr. and Richard returned last week from a three months vacation spent with the formers daughter and families in Denver and Englewood, Colorado and with Mrs. Welte's sisters and brother and families at Cutknife and Paradise Hill in western Col.
Pilotburg
Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Stransky visited their son, Larry who is in college at Ames on Freshman day.
We took a journey to the Homer Eden farm near Lone Tree for melons. They have acres of strawberries, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, squash and melons.
Prairie Dale
Sunday dinner guests of Paris Millers were Mr. and Mrs. Albert Stemm of Lone Tree, Mr. and Mrs. Joel Yoder and Mr. and Mrs. John Hershberger and Delwyn and Clara Mae Bender.
Marilyn Miller was a Sunday guest in the Harley Glick home.
Mr. and Mrs. Herman Gingerich and daughters were Sunday evening supper guests in the Menno L. Miller home.
Iowa Mennonite School
Enrollment at Iowa Mennonite School this year is 224 with 55 seniors, 71 juniors, 52 sophomores and 46 freshmen. Out of state students from Kansas, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Missouri, Indiana, Illinois and Minnesota number 14.
Kalona School
The first meeting of the Kalona P.T.A. for the school year was held Thursday evening, September 17th. A pot luck dinner was held at 6:30 with the following serving on the dinner committee: Raymond Yotty, Earl Fry, Marvin Yoder; J.D. Boyd, Cecil Miller and Paul Brenneman.
On Monday evening the Future Homemakers of America held its annual invitation for the incoming Freshman girls. The girls initiated were: Joyce Spicher, Joan White, Dorothy Mast, Frieda Gorbatjuk, Margaret Swartzendruber and Judy Horesowsky.
The girls were trucked to the country and had the pleasure of walking back, after which refreshments both good and bad were served and the girls were declared members.
The first meeting of the Kalona K-Club was held this week with election of officers and arrangements made for the entertainment following the Lone Tree, Kalona football game Friday night.
Officers elected were: President: Tim Grady; vice president: Steve Reif; Secretary: Ross Rhodes; treasurer: Keith Marner.
Sixth Grade
During opening exercises, Joanna Hershberger and Beverly Kinsinger showed us their rock collections, Beverly Kinsinger and Karen Russell entertained us with a clarinet duet, and Bonnie Yoder, Mary Agnes Yoder and Alice Patterson presented a skit.
Fifth Grade
We tried to see who could jump the farthest. The wining jump was five feet and eight inches, jumped by Shirley Eichelberger.
We then had a running race of 247 ½ feet. Brad Yoder ran this in 13 seconds.
In language we all wrote letters to Martha Berendts.
Multi-Grade
We are always glad for those who bring things from home to make our room look nice or to supplement our studies. Galen and Myron brought us pictures of farm equipment; Dennis, Sandra, Orpha and Ronnie brought samples of grains we were studying; Mary Ann brought a poem about wheat being changed to bread; and Linda brought a lovely winter bouquet and milk weeds.
Third Grade
Connie Goodlander and LeRoy each brought a toad to show us. One of the toads was very rustless.
We talked about the big word hibernate, and some animals that do it.

Local news
It all began with the railroad. Both Kalona and its historical village owe a considerable debt to the railroad that brought the town into existence. Efforts to save the one-time railroad depot led to creation of the Kalona Historical Village that will see the 13th annual Fall Festival, September 21-22.
Admission is by button, available for $2 that will guarantee the wearer admittance for both days. This year's button features the Halliday windmill.
John Robert Griffith, 26, was killed in a two-car crash Sunday, September 16, on the angle road near Frytown.
He is survived by his widow, Deanna; one daughter, Sarah; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Griffith of Wellman; three brothers, Philip Griffith of Wellman, Joel Griffith of Kalona and Kendall Griffith of Iowa City.
Mary and Mabel Gingerich were Sunday dinner guests of their sister, Elsie Gingerich, who recently moved to Kalona from Nashwauk, Minnesota.
Earl Payne of Youngstown, Ohio, visited Laurine King and other friends in the Kalona area Monday. Payne resided at the King home while attending IMS in the 1950's.
The co-ed softball team, sponsored by Kalona-Wellman area merchants, were among the teams playing in the national softball tournament held this month in San Antonio, Texas.
Softball team members are Lisa Yoder, Harriet Stumpf, Sue Huntsberger, Joan Huntsberger, Gina Hagmeir, Sharon Thomas, Craig Schweinfurth, Dwayne Duwa, Dave Yoder, Jim Swartzendruber, Brian Yoder, and Sherwood Yoder.
M-P Schools
Don Showalter was re-elected president of the Mid-Prairie Board of Education during the board's reorganizational meeting Monday, September 16. Showalter was one of three incumbents re-elected during the September 11 balloting. The others are Bill Tynan and Tom Thomas.
IMS Volleyball
The IMS varsity defeated Benton Community before a home crowd in three straight games, 15-11, 15-0 and 15-8. Jani Nafziger served consistently with 9 out of 9 completed serves, including 5 aces. Annette Wenger and Sheryl Hostetler also added spiking consistency to capture the wins.
J.V., Candie Cool led the team with 100% serve reception, 100% serving and 100% spiking. Lynn Miller and Karma Kemp also added 100% serving while Cindy Miller and Rhonda Miller each contributed 100% spiking.
Pleasantview
A retirement community with a tradition of caring for today and tomorrow.
A Melon party was held in both dining rooms Wednesday, September 12. Assisting with serving were Jeanette Yoder Grace Tiessen, Lois Swartzendruber and Luella Jirsa.
Lauralee Chalupa and daughter of Washington visited her mother, Dorothy Weaver, last Wednesday. Saturday evening, September 8, Dorothy accompanied Dean and Lucille Epperly and John Kerr of Sigourney to the Townhouse for supper to celebrate the August and September birthdays in the family.
The Elroy Hoylmans took Bill Hoylman to the home of Warren and Shirley Hershberger at Coralville Saturday evening, September 8, for a barbecue supper.

Mr. and Mrs. Royce Yoder of Hatville, Pennsylvania, are parents of a daughter, Kate Morgan, born September 6. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Emil J. Yoder of Phoenix.
Randy and Jody Miller of Sigourney are parents of a son, Darren Joseph, born September 11. He weighed 8 lbs. 3 oz. and was welcomed home by a brother Derrick and sister Devin. Grandparents are Ervin and Jennis Miller of Kalona and Junior and Bunny Goodwin of Wellman.
Jay and Lori Rosenberger are parents of a 6 lb. 15 oz. daughter, Kristen Anne, born September 11. She was welcomed home by a brother Aaron, and local grandparents are Ed and Lola Martin.
Jim and Cindy Adam are parents of a 7 lb. 1 oz. daughter, Jenna Marie, born September 12. Grandparents are Vernon and Rose Adam of Wellman and William and Barbara Poesel of Burlington.
Mr. and Mrs. Duane Miller of Rt. 3, Washington are parents of a daughter, Tia Renee, born September 12. Grandparents are Mrs. Manas Miller of Kalona and Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Fenton of Brooklyn.
Mr. and Mrs. Earl T. Miller are parents of a daughter born September 13.
Mr. and Mrs. Glen Yoder of Estacada, Oregon, are parents of a 10 lb. 4 oz. son, Lowell J., born September 17. He is welcomed by a brother Lamar and a sister Emily. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Chris Helmuth.
Joe and Sandy Joynt are parents of a 7 lb. 5 oz. daughter born September 17. Grandparents are Earl and Doll Wagamon.
