Scire arrived Aug. 27 to refuel and interact with Submarine Development Squadron 12, the host squadron, and Toledo, the host submarine, before departing to participate in a Joint Task Force Exercise (JTFEX) with the Harry S. Truman Strike Group.
"It's an honor to be selected to host the Italian submarine Scire," said Cmdr. Paul Davis, Toledo's executive officer. "The opportunity to interact with other submarine forces and crews really shows us the universal aspects of submarining. The two navies may do things differently, but going under water is the same regardless of the flag you wear. This was a good chance to share some camaraderie and fellowship and realize we still have an awful lot in common."
JTFEX is designed to test and evaluate the U.S. Navy's reaction to multiple wartime scenarios from small craft attacks to land-based missile attacks and is the final certification for a strike group preparing to deploy. These important partnerships not only provide the U.S. Navy with unique training opportunities against the real-world threat found in the modern, quiet, diesel-electric submarine, it also demonstrates the continued commitment by the U.S. and Italian Navies in building strong, working relationships.
Before getting to work, the U.S. and Italian crews had an opportunity to enjoy grilled hot dogs, hamburgers and sausage. Later, Toledo will host a reception for Scire
Scire is the second of the Todaro class submarines and was commissioned in February 2007. The hybrid submarine carries a crew of 27 and is armed with six torpedo tubes.
