MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS

Cities in Guthrie County will be electing a number of officials this fall.
      The filing period for city elections is underway and ends Sept. 17 at 5 p.m. Nomination papers, along with an affidavit of candidacy, must be filed with the city clerk no later than the deadlines listed above.
      Nomination papers and affidavits of candidacy are available from the city clerk, the local county auditor and on the Secretary of State's website at www.sos.state.ia.us/elections/electioninfo/cityelections.html.
      Guthrie Center will be electing a mayor and two city councilmen. Dennis Kunkle is mayor and Dennis Patrick and Bob Paterson are councilmen whose terms expire. Council terms are four years while the mayor's term is two years.
      Like Guthrie Center, voters in Stuart will vote on a mayor and three council positions. Incumbents are mayor Cheryl Marks and councilmen Bryan Belden, Neal Crawford and Jeff Sherman. A fourth council seat will be on the ballot as Wade Chafa was appointed until this year's election to fill a position that doesn't expire until 2011.
      Panora has three council openings as the four year terms of Curtis Thornberry, Patrick Parker and Mark Vogel are ending.
      On the ballot at Bagley will be a two year term for mayor and four year terms for three council seats. Tabor Lincoln is the current mayor. Rhonda Crum, Don Molle and Chris Cmelik are council members whose terms expire. Too, voters will select a representative to fill the final two years of a four year term. Lee Melton was appointed to fill the position until the 2009 election.
      Ending this year at Bayard are the two year term of mayor Jack Lloyd and the four year council terms of Mark Bonney, Brian Hoffman and Dean Hopkins.
      Casey will elect a mayor for a two year term and two councilmen for four years. Current office holders are Forrest Schnobrich, mayor, and Marilyn Harden and Barry Orness, city council.
      Pam Chance is the mayor at Jamaica whose two year term is ending. Also expiring are the four year council terms of Donna McNeill, Randall Perkins and Karen Onken. A two year council position also will be on the ballot as LaDonna Kennedy was appointed to fill a term that expires in 2011.
      Menlo has three positions on the ballot. Mayor Doug O'Brien is at the end of his two year term. Completing four years on the city council are Mike Culver and Susan Wallace.
      Voters in Yale will elect a mayor and three city councilmen. Incumbents are Steve Stanton, mayor, and Jay Woodvine, Bill Labath and Richard Kipp, council. The mayor's term is two years. Council terms are four years. In addition is a two year term for city council. Kevin Kirtley was appointed after the death of Joe Rohner to fill the four year post until the 2009 election.
      City elections will be held Tuesday, November 3. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
