Local news
Don Rawson arrived from Belle Plain, Saturday, his wife coming on Thursday before. Don took charge of the Holyoke drug store yesterday and is now ready to mix pills for all customers.
Mr. Booge, who has been working in the Rogers drug store for the past few months, quit yesterday and will go to Iowa City, where he will attend the University and take an advanced course in pharmacy.
Leslie Dunlap is the new helper at the depot. He started to work there this morning.
L. E. Edmondson and daughter Nita, left Monday for Chicago where they will visit friends and Mr. Edmondson will buy new goods for his big store.
Mr. and Mrs. A. Z. Rason started last evening for Olathe, Colorado, where they will spend a couple of weeks with their son, Era and family. The Misses Velma Snyder and Ella Kepler will have charge of the Post Office during Mr. Rawson's absence.
Postmaster Rawson received official notification Monday, that Thede Frederick has been appointed Rural Mail Carrier on Route 3 and that Tom Brewer has been transferred to Route 3.
Emmet Louck delivered a nice Moline car to J. A. Wray, of Hedrick, Iowa, last week, and while there he sold five cars to parties in and around Hedrick and one to a man at Richland.
Irvin Dierdorff and Clem Grady went to Iowa City, last night, where they will attend the University. Irvin to take up his second years work and Clem his first year in a course of Dentistry.
Miss Ethel Allen left Monday morning for Chicago where she will attend school this year.
Newel Grady started Monday evening for South Dakota, in company with a couple of good farmers, from near Kalona, Geo. Stumpf and Dan Bopp.
Frank Friese left Monday evening for South Dakota, in company with Joe Casper and Geo. Parker of the South Prairie.
Methodist preaching next Sunday as follows; Hummer 11 a.m., Sharon 3 p.m. and Kalona 8 p.m. Mr. Moore expects to be here, but in case he does not come, Mr. Seeds will preach.
Last Sunday afternoon, while Rev. C. J. Miller was preaching to a congregation, assembled at the home of B. J. Hochstetler, he was suddenly stricken with death. He was a man who held the respect and friendship of all who knew him and a leader in his church.

Charlie Stutsman left Friday night for his fathers ranch in Nebraska.
Mrs. Lou Marner and daughter are here from South Dakota, for a visit at the Schwimley home.
Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hageboeck have returned to Davenport, after spending their honeymoon here.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Meer and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hageboeck were visitors at Amana last Friday. Chris Yoder taking them in his auto and making the trip in about two hours. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Wagner of Frytown were there also.
Eldon Rumige and George Stutzman are Iowa City high school students this year. Lee Schwimley and Edwin Yoder are attending the academy.

The new son at the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Moody will answer to the name of Carlys Jay.
Gordon Dean is the name of the new son born to Mr. and Mrs. Sam Slaubaugh.
Mr. and Mrs. Roy Swartzendruber are the proud parents of a new son born to them Sunday morning at their home southeast of Kalona.
Mr. and Mrs. Myron Knowles of Davenport are the parents of a little daughter born August 27th.
Donald, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis E. Yoder fell from the hay mow in the barn last Friday evening fracturing his left leg just above the ankle.
Bill Fry, son of Dr. and Mrs. J. L. Fry underwent an operation for the removal of mastoids at the University hospital in Iowa City Thursday morning.
The Adams and Sons Agency report the sale of a 200 acre farm north of Oxford, Iowa known as the Rourke farm to Robert Larew of North Liberty.
Charlie Drollinger has a plum tree at his home that bore a real crop this year. A twig of that tree was brought to this office carrying 24 plums.
The Misses Marie Yoder and Ella Rhodes and the Messrs Amos Hostetler, Samuel Hershberger and John Bissey were Sunday dinner guests of Miss Mollie Gingerich at the J. F. Gingerich home.
Harley Parrin will be the manager of the new produce station which will open in Kalona within the next few days. The station is being sponsored by the Sunlight Produce Co. of Davenport. The station will be located in the old Eclipse Lumber office.
Information has been received that Archie Perrin and Will Perrin will open a second hand store and a harness repair shop in the Jonas E. Miller building next to the Town Hall in a short time.
Mrs. A. F. Troyer was surprised Friday evening at her home when a number of families came in with ice cream and cake to help her celebrate her 60th birthday.
The Misses Lydia Hershberger and Leona Welte and Mrs. Alva Kepler attended a rural teacher's meeting at Washington Saturday.
Mr. and Mrs. Everett Teets and Dayle, and Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Swartzendruber and family enjoyed a picnic supper Sunday evening at the golf course.
Carroll and Keith Erb and Geneva and Samuel Spicher are visiting a few days at the home of their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. M. S. Ropp.
The hog market has been climbing each day for the past while until the Chicago market topped the $8 hwt. Wednesday. This kind of a market looks good to the farmers. This is the best price paid for hogs for at least three years.
Mr. and Mrs. Duggin Horrell who were visiting at the John Grecian home south of town met with an auto accident Tuesday afternoon when they were driving their Model T Ford coupe along the road near the English river west of the river bridge on Hiway No. 1, when they evidently lost control of the car and ran is over the 20 foot embankment into the river. Neither occupant were hurt in the smash-up.
Richmond
Frank Chez, son of Wencel and Barbara Chez, was born in Bohemia, October 4, 1865 and passed away at his home near Richmond, Iowa. August 23rd, 1934.
On January 21st, 1889 he was married to Elizabeth Shebeck who preceded him in death February 18th, 1926. To this union were born ten children.
Mrs. Fred Potsander, Mrs. Lloyd Stagner, Mrs. Joe Malichky, Mrs. Bryan Nicholson, Frank, Jr. all of this community; Mrs. George Schachner, Mrs. Willis Rogers, Mrs. Vaughn Schachner and Verton, and Joe all went to Yakima, Washington.
Vic Malichky shipped a car of his hogs Monday.
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Escher and Miss Matilda and Clara TeBockhorst attended a picnic at Iowa City Sunday.
Frost was seen along the creeks this morning. It certainly seems queer to see it as early as 29th of August.
Middleburg
Mr. Claud Kauffman is working for Ort Keesler.
Mr. and Mrs. Joe P Gingerich and family, Mr. Joel Gingerich, Sally, Mary and Lucy, Mr. Harvey Gingerich and Raymond, Mr. and Mrs. Merton Miller and daughter, and Kennith Lintz's and Claud Kauffman were Sunday dinner guests at the Jeff Yoder home.
Bayertown
Bayertown and "You Smash Em I Fix Em" will play softball at Bayertown Friday evening.
Mr. Lute Grout had his house painted this week.
Those attending the State Fair at Des Moines last week end were Mr. and Mrs. Roy Lackender and children, Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe Niffenegger and daughter, June; Mr. and Mrs. Hughie Madden and daughter, Dorothy and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Grout and daughter Daisy.
Prairie Dale
Miss Wilma Boller entertained at her home Sunday twenty-three young folks for dinner and supper.
Miss Mamie Brenneman spent the weekend at the home of her parents in Kalona.

Miss Alta Gingerich returned to her home Saturday after having spent a couple of weeks at the Melvin Gingerich home in Washington.
Mrs. Andrew Yoder is reported to be on the sick list.
Mabel Miller took Sunday dinner at the Joe D. Yoder home.

The Center Grade school started last Monday with Maynard Reber as teacher.
Anna Miller is helping her sister, Mrs. Ed Doolin with the housework this week.
The Lower Deer Creek Sewing Circle cooked plum and apple butter for the Kansas City Mission this week.
Harvey Miller finished his silo which he had been building.
Frank Pierce
Frank Fry went to Chicago last Saturday evening where he attended the baseball game between the Chicago Cubs and New York Giants on Sunday.
Several from this vicinity attended the horseshoes game at Raymond Bontrager's last Monday.
Evergreen
Lewis Bender filled his silo Monday afternoon.
Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Bunnell of near Wellman have been staying with Mrs. Bunnell's brother, V. F. Moore, since their home was destroyed by fire last week.
V. F. Moore is on the sick list with summer flu the past few days.
The chinch bugs and the corn louse are playing havoc to the corn through these parts the past few days.
The Evergreen school has an enrollment of 48. It reminds us of the song of year ago:
Forty little urchins
Coming through the door;
Pushing, crowding, rushing,

Pilotburg
August 27th, Most everyone from our community were at Kalona's Homecoming last Thursday.
James Chalupa is getting along as well as is possible. He is still at the hospital.
The house of the Alfred Bunnell family west of the Burg burned to the ground last Tuesday evening while they were all at West Chester.
Last Friday Fred Mouser, Stanley Mouser, Frank Leeper, Clifford Freel, and Keith Herr drove to Des Moines and attended the Fair and returned that evening.
Prairie Flower
Earl Smith shelled corn Tuesday afternoon for N. J. Benson.
Robert Wiley and nieces, the Misses Mabel and Virginia Wiley, left by auto for Ohio Wednesday morning. They will attend two very enjoyable events. One is the marriage of Miss Marjorie Wiley, the other is the golden wedding anniversary, Sept. 3rd of Mr. and Mrs. F. B. Wiley, parents of Arthur Wiley.
Kalona High Football
Prospects for the High School squad will be called together and given equipment September 1st.
Captain Ward Ehrenfelt in the backfield; Jirsa, Benell, Thatcher, Kiefer and Kelley, linemen will be back, and from the reserves of last year there will be Fry and Batterson who will be fighting for the ends. Bigelow, Burkey, Maxwell and Swartzendruber are other reserves.

Mrs. Bob Harley and infant son, Ryan James returned to their Kalona home Sunday from Mercy hospital in Iowa City.
Miss Elaine Kennel and Wilford Yoder were united in marriage at the Iowa City Mennonite church on Thursday, September 3, 1959.
The bride is the daughter of Mrs. Barbara Kennel of Iowa City and the bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lyle E. Yoder of Kalona.
Exchanging wedding vows September 5 at Upper Deer Creek Church were Mary Elva Swartzendruber, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer G. Swartzendruber of Wellman and Vernon Ropp, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis C. Ropp of Kalona.
Mr. and Mrs. Jason Yoder celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary September 9th. They will have their family dinner next Sunday at Marjories home, Mr. and Mrs. Paul T. Guengerich.
Harley E. Perrin, 60, of Coralville, a Kalona resident for many years, died suddenly at his home, September 3. He was married to Ida Bender in 1923. She died in 1953.
Joseph Starr, 75, former Kalona resident died Sunday evening, September 6 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A .K. Stoutner in Keota. He attended the Kalona schools and on September 27, 1904 was married to Cora Shetler.
Mrs. Phyllis W. Pierce, 31, died at University hospitals in Iowa City August 30, 1959 after a lingering illness. She was a daughter of Raymond and Venora Kessler Westrick, and lived her entire life in the Kalona vicinity.
Katie Swartzendruber Stutzman, daughter of George and Mary Shetler Swartzendruber, was born January 12, 1879 in Johnson County, Iowa. She died at Shenk's Nursing Home in Wellman, Iowa September 3, 1959.
Jeanette Miller, returned to the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Don Miller, Saturday afternoon after having been a surgical patient in Iowa City.
Ed Beranek has been confined to his home and unable to be at his work the past week because of a back ailment.
Donald Benell of Hedrick is recuperating from a serious surgery which he underwent several weeks ago.
Judy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Keith Yoder had the misfortune of fracturing her right elbow and is a patient at the Mercy hospital.
Gary Reif, son of Mr. and Mrs. Logan Reif of Kalona has just enrolled in the Berkeley Baptist Divinity School for the fall term. The school is located in Berkeley, California.
Regina Walker returned to Clinton Tuesday of this week to resume her studies at the Lady of Angels School.
Mr. and Mrs. Monroe Hochstedler left Monday, September 7 from International Air Port by way of Pan American Jet liner for Paris, France. They will spend four weeks touring Europe with their sons Kenneth and Keith.
Phillip Yoder, son of Mr. and Dan M. Yoder; Kirk Alliman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Alliman of Iowa City and Rowen Hochstedler, son of Mr. and Mrs. Monroe Hochstedler of Wellman have returned to their homes after enjoying a two week bicycle trip to Wisconsin.
Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Stagner entertained Mrs. Lyle Fry, Jeanette Rhodes and Mrs. Richard Horesowsky at dinner Friday evening, at the Lark in Tiffin, as a farewell courtesy to Miss Rhodes, who is leaving this week to attend college in Goshen, Indiana.
Don Gingerich accompanied by his sister, Margery Gingerich, and Cortus Beechler of Oakdale, left Saturday to take the formers brother-in-law James Arrants, to his home in Pendleton, Oregon.
Lee McGuire has tendered his resignation as Street Commissioner, Water Superintendent and Town Marshal of Riverside effective at the end of September. He has purchased the East Side Café in Lone Tree.
Mr. and Mrs. Dan Sutter and Lanson of Lincoln, Nebraska were Wednesday, September 2 dinner and supper guests in the Don Yoder home. Mr. and Mrs. Dan Sutter and Lanson attended the Kennel-Yoder wedding in Iowa City.
Mrs. Bertha Mineke and Mrs. Ella Mineke have sold their farm near Kalona to Moses M. Miller and will give possession on March first of next year. the Minekes will be moving to Iowa City to make their home, where they have purchased a new home at 429 Upland Ave.

Following supper, the teachers will be introduced. Mrs. Miriam Dusenbury, elementary supervisor will speak on "The Multi-Grade." Officers for the 1959-60 school year include: President, Ferd Skola; Vice President, Dave Plant; Secretary Treasurer, Lois Yoder.
Soap Football Game
Turf on Victory Field got its first rough-up of the fall season as the Kalona Varsity and Alumni battled it out. Scoring a tremendous 72-yard run by Marlin Brenneman and the extra point to take the lead, 7-0. Also scoring on a battling drive of almost 80 yards, Tim Grady made the final 1 yard plunge with Jim Yoder, running for the extra point.

Sunday dinner guests in the Paris Miller home were Mr. and Mrs. Owen Miller and Debra, Mr. and Mrs. Enos Miller and Karen Sue and Mr. and Mrs. John Hershberger and Delwyn.
Mr. and Mrs. Daniel D. Miller and family were Monday evening supper guests of Mr. and Mrs. Alva Gingerich Jr.
