‘Lucky seven’ await Aqueduct decision

With just weeks to go before the state awards one of seven bidders the challenge of transforming Ozone Park’s Aqueduct Race Track into a racino entertainment complex, some contenders have already made the rounds in hopes of whetting residents’ appetites with promises of majestic hotels, concert halls — and economic growth.
The Peebles Corp., with partner MGM Mirage, proposes the creation of an MGM Grand Casino with 4,500 Video Lottery Terminals, a 350-room luxury hotel, restaurants and meeting center. Peebles has also stressed its committment to working with the community by beautifying areas outside of the venue and targeting participation from local, minority and women-owned businesses.

SL Green plans to generate more than $525 million in annual revenue for the state by building a Hard Rock-brand casino, bar, shops and a 425-seat fresh harvest restaurant and marketplace-style food court. It also plans to showcase music memorabilia from Hard Rock’s extensive collection.
Aqueduct Gaming, a coalition of New York companies comprising Delaware North, Saratoga Gaming and Raceway and McKissack & McKissack, announced plans that include a hotel and restaurant, as well as family-friendly amenities such as Kids Quest, a supervised hourly daycare center and Cyber Quest, a children’s game arcade. The company has said it will work alongside the community.
Penn National Gaming, owner of Hollywood Casino, focuses on promoting “responsible gaming,” which includes employee training programs on recognizing and handling gambling and alcohol problems. Additional information about their plan was not available on their website.
Aqueduct Entertainment Group, made up of several partners that include the Navegante Group, was the first bidder to meet with the Queens Chamber of Commerce to discuss their designs, which include a 300-room hotel, 1,200-seat stadium buffet, 2,500-seat entertainment center and Aqueduct Racing Museum.
Wynn Resorts, founded by Steve Wynn, the mogul behind the Mirage and Bellagio in Las Vegas, has reportedly offered the state $75 million up front for the chance to refurbish Aqueduct. Wynn emphasizes the fact that it has a celebrated in-house design team, no partners and the financial strength needed to succeed in a weak economy.
Capital Play, with partners Mohegan Sun, Extell Development and Plainfield Asset Management, will focus on developing a younger, broader fan base for horse racing, as well as creating entertainment venues and a hotel. Capital Play has over 100 years of experience in Australian racing.
The state expects to announce a winner at the beginning of September.
