Harold Sahs, A Hawkeye fan for 50 years
He was nine years old when he saw his first Iowa football game. Sept. 8 when Harold Sahs attends the Iowa-Iowa State Game, it will mark the start of his fiftieth season as a Hawkeye fan. that's fifty years of attending Iowa games.
Although the first season he was in the stand was 1934, Sahs did not start keeping programs until the opening of the 1935 season when Iowa played Bradley Polytechnic Institute September 28.
At that time the Iowa stadium was not quite five years old (it was dedicated October 19, 1939) and was considered a huge place that could seat a total of 52,184 people. The two press boxes could accommodate 250 each.
"It was considered quite a stadium," Sahs recalled, "and had cost just about a half million dollars. That was a lot of money when you realize that the thirties were the Depression years."
"I got that program autographed by all of the Ironmen, including Kinnick," he said and went on to treasure it well into his adult years. Then, some years ago, "the house was broken into and that was one of the things stolen."
