Boat show on historical society's list of ambitions

In an article in the 2009 Summer Scene, John Baas, owner of a 1959 Chetek Duchess Lapstrake, proposed that the city sponsor a homecoming for Chetek Boats.

It looks like a local organization might take him up on his suggestion. At their meeting Aug. 10, members of the Chetek Historical Society discussed the possibility of organizing a Chetek Boat show for next summer. The show could take place during 2010 Liberty Fest, members thought, or a separate date could be set aside. Boats would likely be brought in on trailers; a show on the water would be more complicated to stage, and some collectors might hesitate to submerge their antiques. Members also considered adding boats to the parade lineup and displaying company memorabilia at the site. The idea is in its infant stages, said museum Director John Banks. "I don't know where it's going to go," he said. Before the historical society delves into the details, they want to gauge local support. Banks plans to begin advertising for owners, organizers and volunteers to get the idea off the ground. "We can't just do everything ourselves," he commented. "We've got to have help." Once a major player in the local economy, the Chetek Boat Corporation now takes a leading role in the town's history. Peopled by local workers and funded by local investors, the factory lasted 20 years, from 1947-1967 (production of boats ceased before 1967). A half-century has passed since the corporation was formed. Chetek Boats used to parade down Second Street during Liberty Fest, but they've been missing in recent years. Now, it's in the hands of Chetek Boat owners to decide whether a tribute is in order. Although Chetek's boat-building days are long over, it's further proof of the factory's lasting effect on the community. Anyone interested in helping with the project can call Banks at 924-4180.

I will do whatever I can to help with this historic tribute to the town of Chetek. This would make my grandparents proud. They loved the boat business and loved the town of Chetek. I have many fond memories spending summers in Chetek with them. Kay Madigan - granddaughter of Vernon & Gwen Larsen - Elkridge, MD

As the daughter of Emil Mix, of Chetek Boats, I think this is wonderful. I have an old rusty Chetek Boats Thermometer that used to hang on our garage wall. I would love to attend if the event takes place. Please keep me posted as I live in Southern California and would need to make preparations to attend.
