City stays with BCEDC, sends letter of concern

At their Aug. 11 meeting, the Chetek City Council passed a motion to remain in the Barron County Economic Development Corporation, with one caveat: concerns will be communicated with the check.

As a practical matter, the $3,505 annual membership won't go far in advertising the city's virtues to potential tourists, the council decided. The money funds a county marketing account, not BCEDC Director Dave Miller's $69,789 salary, as stated last week. Officials have reported dissatisfaction with a number of the nonprofit organization's doings. Clerk Carmen Newman says the city's Web site was incorrectly linked by the BCEDC for months, despite repeated requests to have it corrected. Maps of the area were incorrectly drawn up, and officials have little contact with Miller. Those concerns, and more, are to be addressed, but not to Miller. Instead, council members decided the Barron County Board of Supervisors will receive the letter. Harvest Fest Council members expected to approve the license for a demolition derby at Harvest Fest, but the request was not received. Newman expects the license will be approved at the September meeting. Housing authority Due to lack of communication and attendance at meetings, Chetek Housing Authority board member Mark Soley was removed from the board. Judy Anderson was appointed to fill his position. Mike Linton and Bob Peterson were appointed at last month's meeting. The board continues its search for a new executive director to replace former director Holly Thomas. Applications have been received and interviews will begin in the near future, Linton says. Fuel pump at airport City officials received two bids for a new fuel pump at the airport. Minnesota Petroleum Service Inc., a Minneapolis, Minn., company, won with a lower bid of $22,783. Money in an outlay account will cover some of the cost, Newman says. The rest will be paid for by private donation. Minnesota Petroleum Service's submission shows the current system is noncompliant and requires replacing. Rental property The city's rental property at 1522 Dallas St. will not be repaired until necessary, the council decided. Shingles and windows could use replacing, but it would take three years of rent payments to recover the costs, Newman adds, and the house may not be rented again once the current inhabitant moves.
