GROTON, Conn. - Southeastern Connecticut Navy families with school age children will have a new resource for the 2009-2010 academic year, as Naval Submarine New London (SUBASE) welcomed a new School Liaison this summer.

Miranda Chapman became SUBASE's first School Liaison in July.
"The Navy believes that School Liaison Officers will be a step in the right direction toward helping schools and installations respond to the complexities of transition and deployment," said Chapman.
The Navy recently established the School Liaison Officer Program as an element of its Child and Youth Educational Services for families. Navy families, local school personnel, and base commanders can call upon their School Liaison Officer (SLO) for information and assistance.
Serving as a base's subject matter expert for Youth Education, School Transition, Deployment Impact, and K-12 School issues, the SLO acts as the conduit to provide information, make referrals, and educate families. The SLO also supports command partnership in education efforts and facilitates school-based transition and deployment support programming in the community.
As this central point of contact between the local installation, military families, and schools in the area, the SLO offers an even greater opportunity for families to become more involved in their child's educational experience.
"With a School Liaison Officer on board, Navy families not only have the resource and support to become the best educational advocate they can for their children, but also have the assurance that their children's academic well being is a priority," said Chapman.
If you have questions or would like more information, contact the SUBASE SLO, Miranda Chapman at (860) 694-3772 or miranda.chapman@navy.mil.
