HARLAN -- Three Harlan Community High School business students were awarded for their efforts at the National Business Professionals of America Leadership Conference held in Dallas in mid June. Michael Schwery, William Reinig and Brandon Vis all placed in the top three in their respective contests, and were awarded plaques at the conference. Schwery took third place in advance accounting and second place in banking and finance. Reinig was the champion in extemporaneous speech, while Vis took second place in payroll accounting. A total of 15 HCHS business students traveled to the National Leadership Conference June 17-21 in Dallas. The conference originally scheduled for May 6-10 was rescheduled for June due to concerns with the Swine Flu outbreak last May. The state BPA competition took place in late February with many HCHS students honored and advancing to the national contests. Those who performed well at state moved on to the national event. Chad Swanson, BPA Advisor said the students did a wonderful job at the national conference. "We are very pleased with how well our group competed down in Dallas. The top three students in each competition are awarded plaques and HCHS brought home four of those." The students made their presence known, often placing in the top five. "One of the highlights was definitely Billy Reinig getting first place in his speech contest. Our whole group was pretty excited about that." Reinig said the teachers who help out with BPA are great. Business Professionals of America is a national organization for high school, college and middle school students preparing for careers in business and information technology. "Our job is a lot easier when we get to work with students as high-quality as these 15 students," Swanson said.
