New Office Manager for L-T Reporter
By: Kris Rife 07/23/2009
Howdy Y'all. Or should I say 'Aye'? Or maybe 'How Da'? All are normal greetings for some of the places I have lived in my not so short life thus far. I would like to introduce myself, or reintroduce myself to some. My name is Kris Rife and I am the new office manager for the Lone Tree Reporter.

My background, briefly, is: I was born at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City and lived my first decade right here in Lone Tree. Then my big mean dad, Ron Rife, made us move to a dinky backward town in Nebraska so he could actually use the teaching degree that he had slaved many long years to earn. So, I had to leave civilization and go to Nebraska. A very small town south and a bit west of Lincoln almost on the Kansas border. When I arrived in 5th grade I enlarged my class to a whopping 19 students. Well, no more about that, just let it be known that I survived long enough to graduate and get away.
Granted, I didn't go far, as the college I attended, Doane College, was only about an hour from home. But, I was now only 30 minutes from Lincoln. Doane is a small liberal arts college a lot like Wartburg. Well, after changing my mind many times I finally graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Natural Science with a Biology endorsement. What do you do with a degree like that? You go on for some more schooling. I decided to try Respiratory Therapy and ended up at the College of Saint Mary in Omaha. I hated Respiratory Therapy but they had one of the first Computer Graphics programs in the country and I loved that. Alas, I could not handle an all-girls dry school long enough to get my degree. Bottom line, I am one of many in the country that has a degree that I do not use.
I have had many jobs in my 'career'. I have been a screen printer, worked as a shift manager in the shop in Memphis for a time. Remember the early 'Just Do It' shirts with the college names and mascots on them in school colors? My crew did a good many of them. I have also worked for the IRS. Sorry. Some of the other myriad of things I did that people paid me to do were check advertisings from newspapers nationwide for large corporations, take reservations for Hampton Inns, process credit card payments, coordinate all international toll-free number requests for MCI, manage a clone/fraud department for a cellular company, and project manage call center installations for small businesses. I know, really exciting. I guess, like most of us, the most fun and exciting things we do for no pay. At both colleges I worked with the women's athletic programs as the athletic trainer, I was a scout for a variety of sports, and I was a hitting coach for softball teams.
I have lived here in Lone Tree, Alexandria, NE, Omaha, NE, Chicago, IL, Memphis, TN, the DC area of Northern VA, and Cedar Rapids. I guess what I am trying to let you all know in this rambling novella is that I have been many places, done many things, and have come home again. I want this paper to be OUR paper. If you have any suggestions or comments please feel free to pop in, call me, drop me an e-mail, or send it by snail mail. I can not guarantee that all suggestions or ideas can me implemented but I can not make this paper what you all in the community want it to be, and deserve it to be, if you do not tell me what you want. If an event is happening let me know and I will do my best to cover it. If someone gets an award or some recognition for something let me know and I will do my best to make sure we let everyone know. If there is something you want to know or find out about, let me know and I will do what I can to find out. I can only do so much without your help. I am glad to be here and hope that you are equally glad to have me here.
