Local news
A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. John Knepp, July 27.
Rhina Sommers has been treating the interior of his barber shop to a general painting and renovating, that makes it look fine and dandy.
J. W. Cupp has workman making cement blocks for the foundations of his buildings that he is going to erect on his lot just west of the school house.
Ed. Carpenter had a hand painfully burned while generating one of the lamps in his barber shop, last Saturday night.
Wm. Bontrager, who last year was one of the clerks in the busy Edmondson store is back from his trip to Ohio.
A special train will be run through this place Saturday from Wellman carrying those who wish to attend the great Muscatine Chautauqua for that day.
Miss Sprague accepts a position in the schools of Cook county, Illinois at a salary of $67.50 per month, hence her request for a release here.
Miss Ila Lauser, of the News force is taking a vacation this week. She and her brother henry made their brothers Guy and Frank a visit at their home in New London.
We notice that E. I. Coffey, the Advance man is among those who have taken out hunters' license.
Lizzie Tice and Belle Dunlap arrived home from Cedar Falls last Friday morning where they have been attending the summer term of the sate normal.
Clem Grady is developing his muscle this year, helping the Manatt brothers with their haying and harvest.
There was quite an exodus of Kalona people for Iowa City, to attend the show last Friday. About ninety tickets were sold at the station here.
Miss Bessie Cupp reports that she is succeeding nicely with her school work at Highland park college, Des Moines.
Richmond
Death of Mrs. Mary A. Stagner. Mary Ann Haigler was born December 10, 1818, in Pendleton county, Virginia, where she grew to womanhood. In 1840 she was united in marriage to Henry M. Stagner. Five children were born to them, four of whom are still living. The living are William of Rich Hill, Missouri, Mrs. J. F. Royer and Mrs. Geo. W. Kirkpatrick, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Ray who resides on the home farm.
Misses Della Saur and Elma Vacha returned home from Cedar Falls Friday where they attended summer school.
Mrs. Cloyd Carpenter and baby are visiting with her home folks.
Misses Blanch and Ethel Abbey attended the dance here Saturday eve.
Leona Shilling is at Albert Escher's this week.
Celesta and Zdenek Kos spent a day with Vlasta and Elma Vacha.

The Misses Tillie and Rosa Knotek of Lone Tree were visitors last week with Misses Emma and Bessie Shalla.
Mrs. Matilda Chalupa and Miss Ella Horak Sundayed at the Stanley Heck home.
Charley Casper entertained quite a number of his friends Sunday at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Casper.
Amish
Joe Yoder and family moved temporarily from here today to near Kalona. We hope they will be back soon.
Joe Dawson is quite well again.
West Sharon
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Beck were Sunday guests at the Charles Ressler home near Sharon.
Fred Buck is repairing a well at he Bargely home near South Liberty.
Mrs. Mary Hartsock is spending a few weeks at the home of her son Richard, in Iowa City.
Snake Hollow
D. B. Swartzendruber's are rejoicing over the arrival of a baby boy born July 10.
Douglas Britton, John Maple and Joe Hochstetler have new hay loaders.
The Misses Alice and Annie Enfield and Mrs. Adolph Schneider spent Wednesday afternoon with Mrs. E. H. Dunlap.
Prairie Dale
Chris Yoder and wife and J. A. Boller and wife attended church with the Sugarcreek congregation in Henry Co., last Sunday, going down in the morning and returning in the evening in Yoder's auto.
Mrs. J.C. Bender, after a long spell, is again able to ride in a buggy.
Mrs. Barbara Gingerich visited at Sam Troyer's Wednesday.

We understand our mail carrier, Mr. Wells, on Route No. 5 has resigned.
Christian Ladies Aid Society held a social Wednesday evening in R. C. Gosnell's new barn.
John Beck and his mother were Sunday visitors at Verge Beeney's.
Bruce Moomey and family of Wellman were callers Sunday at the Leroy Moomey home in their auto.
Leroy Moomey and family and M. D. Beeney spent Tuesday at Homer Stimmel's near Wadtown.

Mr. and Mrs. Knupp are proud of the new son who arrived at their home Monday.
The W. A. Phillips family are having a siege of the measles.
Mrs. Cy Bush came down from Keota Saturday to see her new nephew at the C. H. bear home and to attend the funeral of an old friend, Mrs. Stagner, which took place on Sunday.
Bayertown
Quite a number surprised Harley Ford Sunday evening and reminded him of his 16th birthday.
Master McKinley Sleichtez is quite ill with appendicitis.
Lester Amish is on the sick list.
Henry Durst and family and Iva Niffeneggar spent Sunday evening at P. G. Bayer's.
Alice Chody returned from Weatherford, Okla. Monday.
Grandma Northhouse is on the sick list.

Local News
Mr. and Mrs. John S. Yoder, Jr. are the proud parents of a new son born to them July 17.
Mr. and Mrs. Joe C. Ropp are the parents of a new daughter born to them July 16.
Frank Kennard Jr. underwent a surgical operation for acute appendicitis last Sunday morning at the Kennard home north of Hummer.
Donald Slaubaugh, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Slaubaugh, underwent an operation for appendicitis at the Mercy hospital in Iowa City Monday evening.
Fredrick Samuel, son of Jonas H. and Pally Ann Kauffman, was born Feb. 14th, 1912 at Ereland, Wis, and died July 8th, 1934 at Lake Hurst, New Jersey at the age of 22 years old.
Clemens Miller, 30 died Sunday afternoon by drowning in the English River near his home more than a mile southwest of town. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey C. Miller, who live west of Kalona. Mr. Miller and his family lived on the Joe walked farm near where he was drowned.
The son of Ervie Miller and two other drivers of Prosser, Washington brought three new Dodge cars across country. They spent the week and at the Lew Miller home. Mrs. Marion Erb of Goshen, Indiana accompanied.
Cornelius Bender, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bender was driving along the road about two miles northwest of Kalona near the D. B. Hochstetler country home, near mid-night Tuesday night when he was struck from the rear by Cornelius (Col.) Yoder driving his model T Ford. One of the rear wheels of the buggy was completely demolished. The horse ran away, but Bender was not hurt in the least.
D. J. Fisher and Abie Hochstetler figured in an autocrash on Highway No. 1 about two miles north of Kalona, near the Mose. P Yoder home Tuesday morning.
The Hochstetler car was quite badly damaged while the Fischer car will be repaired. Neither of the occupants were hurt to any degree.
Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Swartzendruber and Gail are taking their vacation from their week at the Sinclair Service Station this week.
George F. Bailey was born in Johnson County, Iowa Dec. 15, 1845 and passed from this life at the home of his son, John W. Bailey; July 6, 1934 at the age of 88 years.
His boyhood and young manhood were spent in Johnson County, where he was united in marriage to Harriet Fry, January 1, 1867.
William Riley Adams was born near Kalona, Iowa December 19th, 1847. He was married November 19, 1870 to Ann Elizabeth Dewees. Death came Sunday, July 15.
At last Thursday's softball game on the local lot, Tom James met with the misfortune of being struck over the left eye with a flying bat, Lyle Fry was at bat, striking at the ball, he lost his grip.
Tom was given medical attention at once. Stitches were necessary to dress the wound.
Susan Yoder has been quite ill from her tonsil operation of some time ago. She is improving nicely now, however.
Sharon
During the storm Sunday night, Mr. and Mrs. O. L. Rogers, Miss Mae Snyder and Mrs. Velma Way met with an accident.
A large tree had blown across the road a mile north of Sharon Center, near the Wm. Mineke home, closing the road completely to traffic.
The car slid headlong into the heavy tree trunk and large branches doing immense damage to the Hudson sedan.
July 17-the hail storm of last Friday evening did damage to cornfields of Walter Hughs and John Klan's, but, the wind and rain of Sunday night was quite general over Sharon. Corn was blown down, trees uprooted and blown over, telephone lines down and roof taken of a brooder house.
Richmond
Harold Schnoebelen living near Richmond felt the effects of the heavy electric storm which visited these parts, last Wednesday night when he lost four milk cows and three heifers having been struck by lightning.
Mary Yansky of Solon came Saturday to attend the Maple Grove School reunion Sunday and visit her teacher Vencil Vodicka and sons, Stanley took her to her home Sunday night.
A number of young folk from here attended a dance given by Duana and Dolores Shalla Monday night.
Evergreen
Mr. and Mrs. John R. Knepp entertained at their home Sunday for dinner. Mr. Knepp's father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. George Rhodes, Veda Lyda, and Ada, Mr. and Mrs. Archie Moore, Robert and Marline, and Mr. and Mrs. Mose, Mishler and family.
The Gingerich reunion will be held this Saturday at the Alva Gingerich home.
Amish (Joetown)
John C. Brenneman had the misfortune of being bitten by a dog.
Edith Yoder spent Sunday with her friend, Lucile Swartzendruber.
Mrs. Harvey Miller left for Yoder, Kansas last Saturday morning to attended the funeral of her grandchild, Robert Bontrager.
Egypt
Darlene Sojka, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wess Sojka visited two days last week at Jack Stockman's.
Vera Pribyl entertained a few of her girl friends for dinner last Sunday. Those present were Collette Modesta and Muriel TeBockhorst, Clara and Tillie TeBockhorst, Geneva and Dorothy Pribyl and Christie Malichky and also Hubert Malichky.
Pilotburg
Sunday was a terribly sultry day. The Pilotburg Sunday School folks held a picnic after Sabath school in the grove of Frank Stranksky.
Today (Monday) telephone lines and electric lines were out of order because of the storm.
Little Dorothy Tellin is staying a short time with her aunt, Mrs. George Shalla.
Mr. and Mrs. Carl D. Anderson and Wenona attended the wedding of the Carl's brother, Kenneth, and Miss Irene Crosell.
The storm Sunday evening did a lot of damage at Carl Oldfield's. A tree fell on a screened porch and broke windows.

Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Swartzendruber are the parents of a seven pound, six ounce daughter born July 17.
A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Paul Shetler, July 17. She weighed seven pounds, fifteen ounces.
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Edday are the parents of a son born July 19.
A seven pound, two ounce daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Marlin Shalla.
Mr. and Mrs. Duane Drake are the parents of a son born July 3. He was named Andrw Garland and weighed eight pounds nine ounces. Mrs. Drake is the science instructor at the Kalona High School.
Local News
Amos Hostetler sold the Hostetler Feed & Produce business, equipment and stock to the Strickler Brothers Feed Co. last week. Stricklers taking possession on Monday. Raymond Miller and Louie Horesowsky will remain in the store.
Ray B. Brenneman, rural mail carrier on route 1, Kalona retuned to his work Saturday, July 11 following a five month sick leave.
Vileen Hostetler has resigned her position at the Allen Grocer and has enrolled in the school of nursing. Marlene Swartzendruber is employed at the store to take her place.
Mr. and Mrs. James M. Donohoe, Oxford, announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Rita Jean, to Mr. Charles G. Stumpf, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Stumpf, Richmond.
Mrs. Scott Hall and daughter, Carol, have returned to Kalona after being in Goshen, Indiana last week. Mr. and Mrs. Hall have sold their property in Goshen.
A new water fountain was placed in the park near the Legion building last week. Drinks are on the town.
Jim Strabala reported that he got a buck deer, last week even though it was killed out of season. Jim and his parents and brother, Mr. and Mrs. Wino Strabala and Larry were enroute home from California when the accident happened.
Don Dickel has purchased a lot in the Morningside addition of Kalona and will build a new home in the near future.
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Chody and Randy, and Lewis Hochstedler were guests at an outdoor supper Sunday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Yotty and family.
Alva Miller and daughter, Fredia, and Gordon Miller visited Sunday afternoon in the Bill White home.
Ken Weaver and Jon Yoder are attending Camp Arrowhead near Ottumwa this week.
Harry Showman of Kalona is out of his neck brace which he wore since his car was struck by another in Riverside several weeks ago.
Krista and Harry Showman Jr., Kristen Weaver, Karren Pewit, Harlan Yoder, Gary Thompson and David Maxwell went to Forest Lake near Ottumwa, Monday, and will enjoy this week at a Junior camp.
Little League
Kalona 10, Cosgrove 7. Terry Beredts and Kirk Bailey shared the pitching duties. Eddie Schmucker and Dave Troyer got three hits each.
Kalona 8, Hills 7. Terry Berendts pitched and hit Kalona to the victory. He struck out 12 Hills hitters. At bat he hit 3 for 3 including a homer. The big blow of the game was by Jerome Yoder, a two-out bases loaded triple.
Richmond
Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Welte and Susan of Davenport spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Robert Welte Jr. and family.
Mary Beth Covey returned to her home in Moline after a visit with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Shalla and at the Robert Welte home. Cathy Welte returned home with her for a weeks visit.
Mrs. Margaret Sterling of Davenport spent last Thursday with Mr. Ona Schaefer.
Mrs. Russell Patton, Nancy and Mary Ann, Raymond of Santa Barbara, California arrived by train on Monday for a visit at the parental Bert Stumpf home.
Marilyn Shalla spent the weekend with Cathy Flood and Mr. and Mrs. Dan Flood at Clear Lake.

Loren and Ruth Ann Yoder of Arthur, Illinois, are parents of an 8 lb. 9 oz. son, Brandon Dale, born July 24. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Paul E. Yoder of Kalona and Mrs. Mary Stutzman of Pennsylvania.
Mr. and Mrs. Menno N. Milller are parents of a son born July 25.
Flint Ridge

Generous rains continue with warm and humid which makes for very good growing weather and we have never seen the crops look any better his time of the year.
We are looking for more wet as the sun has been drawing lots of water, the moon is fairly wet and the turtle doves are calling for rain again.
Glen and Nancy Gehman of Hyattsville, Maryland, spent a week or two of vacation with the Harold Benders at White Hall and I heard by the grapevine that they wait out at their ol mail box each week in Maryland to read these lines and I guess that Nancy even said that she thinks that I have some awful long paragraphs and very long sentences which kinda amaze her. Well! She should see this stuff sometime when the News Officer gets it as I usually wait till the last minute to write and really do a hurry up job and the New Office has it looking purtty good by the time it gets in print.
We saw the Howard Millers, Martha and Edna Miller and Alvin Ray Schlabachs up at Pleasantview Sunday and enjoyed at short visit with them.
Howard told us the next time we stay in Kerrville, Texas, overnight we should look them up.
Don and Ruth Yoder stopped at the Mike Krantz residence down South of Riverside Sunday afternoon and helped them harness and hitch their new sorrel pony as they did not know how to buckle a harness and had never seen it done. That pony sure drove out nice for the first time and they really have a fancy rig and will make good Cowgirls and Cowboys.
