Eng joins Golden Living as director of nursing
By ZACH ANDERSON, Daily Leader News Intern 07/10/2009
The Madison Golden Living Center hired a new director of nursing on June 1. Having been there for just over a month, Linda Eng is continuing the tradition of quality care at the long-term care facility.

Eng got into nursing because she found it is very rewarding in many ways.

"You can really make a difference in somebody's life," Eng said.

A director of nursing supervises all nursing staff, which includes nurses and nurse aides; and directs and monitors care of the residents to make sure they receive the best quality care.

"It involves more, such as meetings, working with Medicare regulations and coordinating with all other departments in the facility," Eng said.

She has worked at the nursing home in Flandreau and later became the director of nursing there. She worked at a VA hospital, did occupational health care for Gehl, worked in home care and did managed care for a workers' compensation company.

Eng received her bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) degree from South Dakota State University and went on to get her master's degree in health administration from the University of South Dakota in 2000.

Eng said that she isn't too involved with the Alzheimer's unit at Golden Living because it has its own director, but she supervises the nurse aides who work in the unit.

She said that although being director of nursing is more of a management job, it isn't really getting away from nursing.

"Nursing involves managing in many ways. Charge nurses manage nurses under them," Eng said.

She added that there is a progression with experience; the more experience one gets, the more they move up.

Eng replaced Barb Hart, who left in April and went to Lake Norden, where she is now a charge nurse.

"I am very pleased to be here. This is a very good facility with a good team that I am happy to be a part of," Eng said. "I am glad to be a part of the residents' lives. and I am always looking to improve their quality of life."
