When a tornado touched down last Friday, June 26, it gave the town the chance to test out its recently completed Emergency Operations Center at Town Hall.

Mayor Andrew Adil said the radio equipment, computer access and other features at the center gave the town a central location from which to coordinate its cleanup efforts, documentation, safety checks and traffic direction.
Adil said much of the credit goes to Emergency Management Director Dick Fippinger, who with some advice from some state and area colleagues, set up the center.
"We were well trained," Adil said. "Everyone really knew what to do."
At the center most of the time from Friday night through Sunday night were Adil, Town Manager Bonnie Therrien and representatives from the town departments such as police, building, public works, physical services and parks and recreation. Members of the Wethersfield Volunteer Ambulance Association, Wethersfield Volunteer Fire Department, Connecticut Light and Power, AT&T, Cox Cable and others were also on hand. Some of Adil's fellow Town Council members also spent some time there. Officials such as State Rep. Russ Morin, state Rep. Tony Guerrera and state Sen, Paul Doyle also stopped in over the weekend.
Therrien said it's always hard to be away from family in such a situation but said the staff truly came together.
"It was a real pleasure to work with the staff to get this done," she said.
Jeffrey K. Bridges Jr., who will start as town manager in August was also in town and took some good natured ribbing about bringing the bad weather from Kansas, where he has worked for the past several years.
Adil said Bridges actually pitched in and helped with some tree work himself.
The town also opened the doors of the Pitkin Community Center for those who needed a place to go during the storm.
Only a few residents ended up needing shelter but others were able to come to take a shower and charge cell phones.
Also pitching in the storm affected areas were numerous crews from Wethersfield and surrounding towns. Crews from Rocky Hill came to Wethersfield before cleaning their own town, Adil said. Other towns such as Berlin, Manchester and Conventry also pitched in.
Crews from power, telecommunications and other companies put in numerous hours as well. Connecticut Light and Power received assistance from crews as far away as New Hampshire.
Town crews continue to clean up after the storm.
"We're going to take a long time to recover from this an we're going to take a long time to thank everybody," Adil said.
Most important the town was thankful that there were no serious injuries from the storm.
"It was just absolutely amazing," Adil said.
