Hospice of Washington County hosted a charity golf event in his name on Thursday, June 25, raising over $9,000 to help fund hospice programs across the county.
"This probably doubles what we have done in the past," said Hospice accountant Dee Cerny. "We were just overwhelmed with the turnouts of the teams and all the donations and the participation. I'm sure mostly in honor of Short Peterseim."
"The north part of the county really responded to the Short Peterseim memorial," said Cerny. "It was a phenomenal tournament and turnout."
In 2007 the Hospice event fielded 11 teams. This year, there were 20 teams registered.
There was great weather for the tournament with a bright sun, and no rain at the Kalona Golf Club which has hosted the event for the past seven years.
"It was fabulous. They do a wonderful lunch and are a very accommodating group to work with," said Cerny of the Kalona Golf Club staff. "I think it's the seventh year we've done it - and we'll be back there in the future."
Participating in the event were a number of Short Peterseim's close relatives, including his wife Jan Peterseim. Jan golfed with her sister Marcy Keppy and brother-in-law Dave who came for the event from Phoenix, AZ. Also attending were Peterseim's son and daughter Locke and Meg as well as Jan's brother and sister Myron Holden of Tipton and Linda Miller of Tipton.
"It's a great tribute to the respect of Short in the community," said Jan Peterseim. "And certainly people want to support hospice. They knew that hospice of Washington county is a fine organization.
Having such a good bunch of friends around and the support from this area was outstanding."
Winners at the golf tournament were the team of Jim & Mary Hauth and Clayton & Tina Hershberger who shot a 58.
Second place went to the team of Kerry Skinner, Myron Holden, Jan Holden and Robert Dickson who shot a 59.
Third place went to Steve Slabaugh Tom Davey, Chad Driscoll and Rob Smith who shot a 61.
There was a $5,000 cash award available for hole-in-one on the short hole #8, but that award was not collected.
Longest Putt went to Don G. Yoder, Longest Male Drive went to Chad Zear, Longest Women's Drive went to Jayme Colby.
Washington County Hospice Executive Director Jean Wollenberg said the support from the community showed their respect for Peterseim.
"I think he did a lot for the community and I think Jan and Meg and Locke were pleased," said Wollenberg.
Short Peterseim died June 23 of leukemia. He was a second-generation owner of Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona and an active member of the Kalona community prior to his death.
