NORWICH, Conn. - Joined by Sailors from Naval Submarine Base New London and Naval Submarine School, retired Chief Petty Officer Alexander Kreiglowa (center) became the 42nd recipient Norwich Native Son Award at the Rotary Luncheon held at the Norwich Holiday Inn on June 24. Started in 1968, the Norwich Native Son honors people who were born and raised in Norwich, then left the area to do great things for humanity. Kreiglowa never received his high school diploma, but instead left home when he was only sixteen to serve in the Navy during World War II. He retired after 23 years, and after attaining the highest enlisted rank in the Navy. Kreiglowa then spent his retirement in San Diego, California where he made his fortune in real estate. He donated seven million dollars to Navy League, to endow 20 scholarships of 15,000 dollars each annually. At the conclusion, the reserved Kreiglowa was also proudly awarded with his high school diploma from the Norwich Free Academy.
