DSU business fees OK'd
By Staff 06/29/2009
A new undergraduate business discipline fee was approved for Dakota State University, Black Hills State University and Northern State University.

According to Tracy Mercer, information research analyst for the South Dakota Board of Regents, this request was approved at the regents board meeting Friday in Pierre.

Each of the universities asked for a $21.25 per credit fee, which is currently available only at the University of South Dakota at a rate of $20 per undergraduate credit and $40 per graduate credit for certain courses.

DSU requested the fee for its accounting, business administration and economics courses. BHSU is requesting the fee for those same classes, as well as human resources management and tourism & hospitality management. NSU is requesting the fee for the same classes as DSU as well as business education courses.

Based on current credit hours at the universities, the new fee could mean about $80,000 in revenue for DSU; $248,710 for BHSU; and $210,077.50 for NSU.

Revenues from the fee are to be directed toward curriculum development, recruitment of students and student supports. Some of the student supports proposed at DSU are expanding the student internship program; increasing programming to improve retention and graduation rates; providing support for student club activities and business-focused campus lectures; and supporting undergraduate research projects.

Cecelia Wittmayer, DSU vice president for academic affairs, said this fee is requested in response to increasing expenses with the business administration program.

One of the activities planned at DSU is the purchase of additional hardware and software that will provide course simulations and real-world experiences for students.

The fee will be attached to any course at DSU with an ACCT, BADM and ECON extension, some of which are general courses available to all students.
