Summer reading programs at Cora J. Belden Library are not only designed to get the whole family involved in a good book but to also to stretch the imagination, promise plenty of special events and offer numerous special prizes.

This year, children are encouraged to "Be Creative at Your Library," teens to "Express Yourself at Your Library" and adults to "Create, Explore and Participate at Your Library."
The nationally used themes come with plenty of exciting incentives.
"It really has a lot of punch to it," said Assistant Director/ Children's Librarian Barbara Wysocki. "We hear about it over and over again."
The programs for school-aged readers have also been developed in conjunction with the school district.
"We have a really great partnership with the school system," Wysocki said.
Children entering grades kindergarten through five can pick from plenty of books set aside at the library or read anything their parents deem appropriate. As part of the Be Creative Club, they will be eligible for a free T-shirt (while supplies last) after reading five books and after 10 books, a free paperback book from a special cart, courtesy of the Friends of Cora J. Belden Library. Other incentives include coupons from local vendors, including McDonald's. Younger readers can also participate in Book Buddies on Wednesdays from 12:30 to 1:15 p.m. July 8 to Aug. 5 during which children in grades 4 to 8 will read to those in Grades K to 3. Sign up at the library by July 3 or call 258-7621.
There will also be plenty of special events such as a Tie-Dye T-shirt program on July 7, A Talent Show on July 15 and a Kindergarten Welcome Aug. 26. There are numerous other programs as well. Stop in the library or log on to www.rockyhilllibrary.info for details.
Older students also have plenty of chances to join in the fun. Among the offerings are a Hip Hop Workshop on July 23 that includes sessions for Grades 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 and game show mania the evening of Aug. 19. That programs will take place at the community center.
"It gets to be a lot of fun," Wysocki said. "There's a lot of ways for kids to express themselves creatively."
"Express Yourself at Your Library" is the reading program for those in grades six to 12. It takes just one book to be entered in a contest for an IPod touch. Three books gets readers a free Carabiner clip and six qualifies them for a free book. Other prizes include Subway coupons.
Adults are being urged to "Create, Explore and Participate at Your Library." The library has chosen many selections to encourage adults to be creative on vacation, at home, in the kitchen or in the arts
"We came up with themes to make it more fun," said Terri Corry, the reference librarian.
The library will also display books that patrons may not often realize it has to add to the excitement.
But while adults are encouraged to step outside of their normal reading patterns, it is not mandatory. Any books qualify for the program.
Adults who read at least three books, will qualify for an environmentally friendly tote bag from the library. In addition, drawings for gift baskets will be held every couple weeks.
This year, all readers will keep track of their progress online. Readers can sign up at www.rockyhilllibrary.info and redeem their prizes with their library card. Anyone who needs help, a card or does not have internet access can see a librarian for assistance. Questions can also be directed to 258-7621.
