Third graders from P.S. 207 were treated to a pizza party Friday courtesy of Joseph DeCandia Jr., owner of Lennys Clam Bar, after the fundraising dynamos brought in more money for juvenile diabetes than any class or school in the community.
Teacher Melissa Gonzalez said her class, 302, has taken part in several fundraisers throughout the school year, but this one, which coincided with last months first annual Howard Beach walk-a-thon to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, really hit home.
The students were shown a video of a day in the life of a child their age who suffers from juvenile diabetes, Gonzalez said. The kids really made a connection with her.
John Cardone, 8, said raising money was important to him. Im helping people who are sick, he said.
Kelly Sinisgalli and Juliana Hatzinger, both also 8, agreed.
It feels really good to help people with diabetes, Kelly said.
I thought it was a really great thing, Juliana said. It felt good to raise money for a cure.
P.S. 207 raised more than $8,500 for the JDRF.
