DSU Foundation hires new campaign consultant
By Staff 06/24/2009
Judy Payne
The Dakota State University Foundation has hired the firm of Paul J. Strawhecker, Inc. as consultants for the university's capital campaign. "We are pleased to have the services of this consulting firm, which has been involved in successful capital campaigns on behalf of at least 10 South Dakota clients," said Judy Payne, vice president for university advancement.

Strawhecker, Inc. replaces Ron Mulder, who retired from the consulting business earlier this year. The new firm specializes in providing fund-raising assistance to nonprofit organizations. Former and current clients are from education, healthcare and other public sectors.

This is the DSU Foundation's first capital campaign and is still in the early phases.

"To date, we have $8.2 million in gifts and pledges toward the $37 million, five-year capital campaign goal," said Payne. "The faculty and staff portion of the campaign is nearly completed, and we are thrilled with the overwhelming response. The Madison area portion of the campaign will be full speed ahead in the very near future."

In other news from the DSU Foundation, the position of assistant development director held by Cindy Christensen has been eliminated due to budgetary constraints. Payne said the change in staffing is the right move at this time.

"The economic downturn has affected us, as it has most foundations. Our investment portfolio is down in value, putting limitations on awards of endowed scholarships," she said. "We had to make some tough decisions, but did so in the interest of the students at DSU and what we can do to provide scholarships. We are fortunate to have loyal and committed donors continuing to support our fund-raising efforts, and we are looking forward to a successful capital campaign."
