A good program for the celebration next Saturday. Good speakers, plenty of amusement. You're sure to enjoy yourself in you celebrate in Kalona.
W. H. Palmer has put in a nice cement walk in front of his properties on east Barnes street.
Good room for your autos in the I.O.O.F. building. Entrance in Alley at rear of building.
Hugh Dunlap is the proud posser of a nice young pony, a black and white Shetland and a dandy.
P. J. Huff returned Saturday from Casper and Lander, Wyoming. While there be bought a couple of cars or horses, intending to bring them here to sell them. He decided to offer them on the Omaha market.
At Shaw had a barn raising laSt Thursday.
The carpenters are starting on Lew Feldman's new house this week.
Pretty good cherry crop this year. They are selling at about $2.00 per bushel.
Iowa City Hotels are preparing to comply with the new law, that takes effect July 4th. The law requires that rope ladders must be kept in every bedroom and fire extinguishers on every floor.
Several auto drivers have been fined for too rapid speeding by the authorities of Iowa City recently.
Mrs. M. V. Long enjoyed a visit from two of her brothers last week. First her brother Frank McDowell of Grinnell, and lady friend made her a visit and later, her brother Bert and newly married bride from Kansas came.
Lethbride district Sunny Southern Alberta Lands. Grow 30 to 60 bushels winter wheat per acre. Figure it up at $1.10 to $1.25 per bushel on lands bought at $15 to $20.
The new law prohibiting the use of tobacco by boys under sixteen years of age is a good one and if enforced will help the boys past a part of the danger period of life.
The ordinance published last week forbidding spitting on the sidewalks has been under consideration for some time.

The Johnson County Patriotic Association extend to all good citizens of Johnson County, a most cordial invitation to spend July 3rd with them at the Walter Hughes's Grove.
Fred Fry and Miss Nellie Wagner were united in marriage Wednesday evening of last week at 8 o'clock, at the pleasant home of the bride's mother, Mrs. Jennie Wagner at Sharon Center.
Mr. and Mrs. Fry will occupy the old Fry homestead at Frank Pierce, which the groom and his brother Harry have purchased.
A pretty wedding was soleminized at eight o'clock, yesterday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Means, in Sharon township, united the lives of their daughter Faith Means and Wm. Snider, son of Mrs. J. W. Snider of Kalona.
Amish
J. L. Dawson who was severely bitten by his horse last week is progressing very satisfactorily.
Mr. and Mrs. John Palmer gave a wedding anniversary party on Monday evening at their home.

Thomas Wagner now rides in a fine new automobile.
Henry Brandt expects to move his family to their new home near Iowa City this week. Their new house is completed now.
Frank Fry and Merril Gosnell are carpentering for E. B. Gosnell who is putting up his brother R. C.'s new barn.
Jay Butterbaugh is the proud owner of a new buggy.
Simon Swartzendruber delivered hogs at Kalona Tuesday.
Mr. Al Miller and Miss Bel Phend were married Wednesday, June 30 at Nappanee, Ind. We congratulate these young people in their newly wedded life.
Emmet Louck and Dr. Bigelow of Windham went to Moline, Monday evening to bring back a new touring car that the doctor has recently purchased and will use in his practice.
Bayertown
There will be a dance at Bayertown hall, Monday evening, July 3, 1909. Also lots of fireworks. Everybody invited.
P. G. Bayer of the Bayertown store was doing business in Kalona Tuesday. His daughter came with him to undergo surgical treatment for a difficulty of the head and nose that has been troubling her.
Charley and Roy Lackendar, Harry Chody and Frank Halter were Iowa City Callers Sunday.
Bruce Clark had the misfortune to break his leg, while on his way home from Hills Friday.
Middleburg
Leon Southwick and lady attended the show at Riverside last Friday night.
L. R. Feldman has the carpenters tearing down the old house to make room for the new one.
Lewis Schnoebelen is improving slowly from a severe case of the mumps.
A. D. Shaw had an old fashioned barn raising last Friday. About fifty neighbors and friends were present.
Clarence Bush and helpers from Kalona are plastering Nic Schnoebelen's new house.

Mrs. Ed Loan and daughter Mildred and John Doll spent Sunday at the L. Doll home.
Joe Kron has a new mower and Frank Blecha a new hay loader.
Geo. Kos, of the Richmond neighborhood delivered a carload of nice porkers to Kalona shippers Tuesday.
Wellman
Mrs. Lee Small and children returned to their home in Kalona, Monday, after a visit at the parental Henry Dungar home.
The kid census of Wellman could have easily been taken Tuesday morning, for we guess they were all at the train to see Uncle Tom come in.

Local news
A lot of excitement on the streets of Kalona Tuesday evening. Jack Fry had a horse break loose from him and ran loose through the streets here. The horse had the harness on and seemed to be running wild. A. B. Slagel on horse back was attempting to catch the loose horse, while others were trying to corner it with their cars. The chase ran for about half an hour before the horse was caught on the road toward John Horak's.
Director C. A. Bragg of the Kalona High School band announces that Mrs. Ernestine Grady will sing a popular number during the band concert.
June 27 seems to have been the hottest day we have had thus far. It registered higher than 104 degrees and that is some hot weather.
Junior Allen of Riverside is spending a few days at the Mose Levy home.
Miss Edna Yoder and Clarence Swartzendruber, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Smucker visited "Little Bit of Heaven" and other places of interest in the Tri Cities Tuesday.
The Misses Marguerite Scranton, Leona Welte, and Cleola Grady, and Mrs. R. E. Adams attended a miscellaneous pre-nuptial shower at the Wm. O'Loughlin home in Riverside Friday afternoon given by the Misses Dorothy Soukup and Ila O'Louklin for Miss Pauline O'Louglin.
Eight o'clock was the hour of the nuptials of Miss Helen Osborn, daughter of Mrs. Mae Osborn of Coralville, and Mr. Logan Reif, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ervin H. Reif of Kalona, June 26.
Walter Lemley met with a serious accident last Monday evening when he was returning home from work with the clearing gang on Highway No. 22. He with another man was sitting in the rear of a box of a truck. They were both thrown out when the driver made a quick turn, throwing Walt onto his shoulder in such a way that his left collar bone was broken.
John C. Bender brought to this office last Saturday afternoon a piece of wood found 90 feet under ground while boring a well on his farm northwest of town.
Mr. and Mrs. Merle Hamilton have taken light housekeeping rooms at the Alice Sleichter home.
Tonight (Thursday) Pres. Roosevelt will be on the air at 8:30 central standard time over WOC-WHO and will tell you what he has done since March 4th, 1933 to now, and what he hopes to do from now on.
J.K. Mehaffey and Donald Erickson motored to Washington Sunday afternoon to get Betty Mulcahy who returned for a visit with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. K. Mehaffey.

Chris Bender is down with the mumps.
Road workers are cleaning out the brush and getting the road ready for grading and graveling from the Borschel hill to Frytown.
Two jobs of threshing have been done in the Sharon community already this year. Walter Weeber and Dave Gingerich threshed their crops of wheat. Weeber's wheat turned out 11 bushels to the acre.
John Kleinschmidt delivered two truckloads of hogs to Iowa City buyers.

Miss Ursula Swartzendruber was a dinner guest at the Ora-Troyer home lat Sunday.
Emery Yoder is building an ice house in this little burg.

Miss Gertrude Mast and Emma spent Tuesday afternoon at the Jeff Yoder home.
Mr. O. A. Kessler, Eunice, Leona and Maxine were Iowa City shoppers Saturday afternoon.
Richmond
Miss Glee Stumpf is working at the Friese Hotel in Kalona.
The little son of Joe Freund was very sick last Friday, but is better again.
Mr. and Mrs. Wm. L. Shalla attending the funeral of her aunt, Mrs. Adell Baschnagel, at Riverside Monday. Richmond was her girlhood home, being known as Adell Crits.
Brush
The Brush school house is being improved by having a coat of paint put on. Niffenegger from Kalona is doing the work.
Miss Olive Yoder assisted Mrs. Mark Ross with her work a couple days last week.
Latty Brothers from Riverside is doing some work on a deep well for John Hershberger last week.
Egypt
John Liska had the misfortune of hurting his finger in a mold trap last Tuesday morning.
Darlene Sojka, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wess Sojka, visited last week at the Raymond Kos home at Wellman.
Mr. and Mrs. Roy Krotz entertained at a six o'clock dinner Sunday evening. The occasion was to celebrate the birthdays of eight of the guests namely; Mrs. Frank Pribyl and Wilbur, Mrs. Joe Koloseik and Emily, Mrs. Peeler of Washington, Robert Vincent of Keota, Norma Jean and Donna June Krotz.

June 25-Sunday morning we got our first real rain for a long time.
Last week Frank Leeper lost a cow and Frank Stransky a horse.
Mrs. Carl D. Anderson came home from the Washington hospital with their new baby son, Carlson Ray, Sunday evening.
Orva Scott sold a truck load of cattle Monday.
Miss Lucile Wade is home from her school duties at Ames.
Mrs. Harry Green has had quite a siege of a sort of rhumatism the past week.
Prairie Flower
Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Gammon and daughter Marjorie and the Misses Maxine and Myrna Reeves spent Thursday evening at the Cy Huber home in honor of Marjorie's birthday.
Mrs. T. C. Reeves and daughter Phyllis, called on Mrs. Rolland Benson and Mrs. L. J. Miller Wednesday afternoon.

Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Flisher are the parents of a daughter born June 28.

Local news
For three quarters of a century the Mellinger property has been located at the west edge of the Kalona business district and has become a distinct landmark in the community. The property was built in the 1880's by Amos Mellinger I, and has been in the same family all of these years, however the entire residence was built at three different intervals. At present the house has been prepared for moving from its location in Kalona to the Ivan Wagner farm northwest of here. The property was recently acquired by the Farmers Savings Bank for its new bank building.

Wedding vows were exchanged June 27 in Kalona by Miss Charleen Ann Gascho, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wallace R. Gascho, Kalona, and Mr. James B. Marner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ora L. Marner, Parnell.
Mr. and Mrs. Morris Doolin and son were in Indiana during the weekend where they attended the wedding of Mrs. Doolin's brother, Clyde Hostetler. During their absence Joni Lynn Doolin enjoyed the weekend with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Doolin.
Mr. and Mrs. Loren Spicher and family have moved from the Reif apartments and will soon be occupying their new home in the north part of Kalona. Mr. and Mrs. George Allen Jr. will move into the apartment vacated by the Spicher family.
Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Stagner and sons entertained guests at dinner Sunday honoring the birthday of Mrs. Carl Craig Jr. of Riverside and Karen Russell.
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Clark and daughter have moved into the Larsen property on highway 22. Mr. Clark is employed at the Eclipse Lumber Co.
Manass Miller and lady friend of Goshen, Indiana are visiting at the parental Dave M. Miller home.
Mr. and Mrs. Don Miller, Mrs. Vernon Hartzler, Marie Jackson, Mr. and Mrs. Ferd Skola and family attended the concert given by the students attending the All State Music Camp in Iowa City. Jeanette Miller and Sally Skola were among students participating.
About 100 campers attended the Lake Darling 4-H Camp, June 17-21.
4-H'ers from the Kalona area attending the camp were Jeanne Bone, Kathleen Walsh, Barbara O'Conner, Janet Kallaus, Mary Thomann, Phillip Ropp, Larry Brenneman, John Sojka, Charles Sojka, Gary Kos and Eddie Gerot.
The new 70 mile-per hour daytime speed limit on all primary roads will become effective July 4.
Babe Ruth
Tom Bailey and Ken Kepler pitched Kalona past North English. Kalona is now in second place. Tom is also leading the team in hitting, his average is almost 700. Don Miller is second with an average of 375.
Bayertown
Neighbors and friends of William Halter and wife gave them a charivari Friday evening, a large crowd attended.
Mr. Orval Grout returned from Mercy hospital Wednesday.
Mr. Clair Grout returned to Iowa City Monday, where he will undergo eye surgery.
Mr. and Mrs. Howard Bailey, Mrs. Agness Symon, Mrs. Rose Sleichter and Robert were callers in Muscatine.
Richmond
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Malichky and Louie Horesowsky were Sunday dinner guests at the home of the Malichky's niece and her family, Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Sieren near Farson, Iowa. Other guests were Mrs. Malichky's sister and husband Mr. and Mrs. Bryan Nicholson of Farson.
Mr. and Mrs. Clem Shalla, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Ledman and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Kallaus enjoyed a picnic dinner at Lake MacBride Sunday.
Pilotburg
Wayne Stranskys are starting to build a new house.
Mr. and Mrs. Gene Scott moved their trailer house from Kalona to the parental Richard Scott home last Thursday.
Miss Betty Yoder had last Wednesday and Thursday off from her work at Oakdale sanitarium and spent it at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ernie Yoder.
The Lyle Crawford family went Tuesday evening to Wyman to help his mother, Mrs. Jim Crawford celebrate her 77 birthday.

Local news
A long-time landmark for the eastern edge of Kalona's main street, the Farmers Feed Mill dates back to 1925 for its origin. Its present business name was established in October, 1944 by Gideon Bender and Elmer Marner at a time Kalona was a small, rural town and agriculture still relied, in many quarters on the horse.
Later purchased by Thomas H. Miller, the Farmers Feed Mill is now a family corporation with Mr. Miller, his son, Roger and his wife and daughter-in-law as the corporation officials and stockholders. Managed by Marvin Yotty, the company provides bulk feeds of various brands. The firm employs Mike Welte as salesman and Richard Schneider to handle deliveries. The Farmers Feed Mill will note its sixtieth anniversary next year.
Jan Michelle DeBoer and Scott E. Swartzendruber exchanged marriage vows June 16 in the Manson Mennonite Church, Manson, Iowa. The groom's father officiated.
Mr. and Mrs. Sherm Taylor of Sarasota announce the engagement of their daughter, Rebecca jean to Calvin Miller son of Mr. and Mrs. Gene Miller of Kalona.
Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Yoder of Grand Island, Nebraska, announce the engagement of their daughter, Deborah, to Terry Erb, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Erb of rural Wellman.
Dr. and Mrs. Robert T. Cook of Riverside announce the engagement of their daughter, Lisa to Alec Scranton, son of Dr. and Mrs. James Scranton, former Kalona residents.
Nolan S. Hostetler, a junior business economics major, is listed on the spring term honor roll at George Fox college at Newberg, Oregon. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Sanford Hostetler of Rural Wellman.
Rhonda Lou Yoder was among those named to the Dean's list at Iowa Sate University for the spring semester.
I will be 40 years old July 7 and to honor the occasion an open house will be held at Coiffure Stylists July 6 and 7. Regina Jones.

Flint Ridge

Haymaking weather has arrived on Flint Ridge again after several weeks of damp, wet weather and we expect it to continue for several weeks as the moon has changed again.
The Prairie Dale haymakers helped the Flint Ridge haymakers stack hay Monday.
One day last week Harold Morgan of Washington stopped at our place and spent a short visit with me. He said he grew up in the Lincoln and Brush areas years ago and is now retired and lives in Washington and reads the Kalona News.
Harold said he had a lot of fun while growing up in this area and said he and his buddies used to have fun halloweening. Herman Remmig who used to live on the north banks of Deer Creek up southwest of Joetown years ago as Herman used to get purtty well riled up.
We also crossed paths with a David Miller and his wife of the Partridge, Kansas, area who were in this area helping to clean up following the recent tornado which passed through.
We heard that a news reporter from the Chicago area was in the vicinity to do a writeup on the tornado for a Chicago newspaper and the reporter said he never saw so many people turn out to help and could not believe all the labor that was just donated.
Charles Duffy Sr. and Charles Duffy Jr. delivered a new red Bull to the Flint Ridge polled Shorthorn Breeders last Wednesday forenoon. The Duffys are well known Shorthorn Breeders from the Solon area.
We attended the wedding and reception of Terry Meade and Gale Shaver Saturday afternoon which was a very nice wedding and reception. So we say Congratulations! to Gale and Terry.
Don and Ruth Yoder were recent guests of Paul and Nina up on the big bottom.
