OXFORD - Two local boys are attending the 68th American Legion Boys State under the sponsorship of the American Legion, David S. Miles Post 174, at Eastern Connecticut State University this week.

Three Oxford girls and two from Seymour will attend the 65th annual Laurel Girls State at the same university the following week under the sponsorship of the post auxiliary.

The boys are Daniel Spicer, son of Keith and Lisa Spicer of 13 Sarah Drive, and Max Orner, son of Todd and Jackie Orner of 17 Silva Terrace.

Both boys are about to enter their senior year at Oxford High School.

Daniel is president of the class of 2010, a member of the National Honor Society and plays varsity football, basketball and volleyball.

He is a member of the National Honor Society and was a participant in the Connecticut Science Fair and Connecticut Student Innovation Expo.

Max was on the high school football team for three years, on the indoor track team for two years and is a member of the National Honor Society. He also is a member of the Youth Conservation Corps.

Girls attending Girls State are Cady Greene, Andrea Nilsen and Trista Kiely, all juniors at Oxford High School, and Gelsina Stanley and Stephanie Walsh of Seymour High School.

Cady is the daughter of Robert and Linda Greene of 34 Cedar Lane.

She is a member of the National Honor Society, the Spanish Honor Society and the Youth Conservation Corps.

Andrea, daughter of Gerard and Linda Nilsen of 214 Chestnut Tree Hill Road, is a member of the high school drama club where she is in the process of helping form a technology crew. She is a high honors student.

Trista Kiely, daughter of Kevin and Roxanne Kiely of 43 Coppermine Road, is a member of the Youth Conservation Corps.

Gelsina is the daughter of John and Anna Stanley of Seymour. Her activities in school include cross country track. She also participated in a volleyball benefit tournament and in a fund-raising walk-a-thon.

Stephanie, daughter of Kim and Sean Walsh of Seymour, was class president in 2008, has been on student council since 2006 and was a member of the school newspaper staff in 2008. She has been a member of the dance team and Spanish Club since 2007.

Stephanie also has been a member of St. Augustine's Youth Group since 2005 and is an instructor at Aimee's Academy of Dance.

Boys State, scheduled June 21 through June 26, and Girls State, scheduled June 27 to July 2, provides instruction in the basic principles of managing a democratic society.

The emphasis is on participating in a model state complete with governing bodies and elected public officials.

The American Legion and the auxiliary sponsor outstanding local boys and girls in an effort to foster an interest in the study of government and in developing civic leadership and pride in American citizenship.

In addition to Post 174, sponsors for Boys State this year include the Miller-Ward Funeral Home and the Naugatuck Savings Bank.

David S. Miles American Legion Auxiliary is the sponsoring unit for the girls from Seymour and Oxford.

David, Max, Cady, Andrea and Trista are the first students to represent Oxford High School in the event.

All the students were selected by their respective schools' guidance counselors.
