RACCOON RIVER VALLEY TRAIL

The Vision Iowa board last week awarded over $6.3 million to seven projects, including the Raccoon River Valley Trail in Guthrie, Greene and Dallas counties. The RRVT received $1.6 million in CAT (Community Attraction and Tourism) funding to help pay for the acquisition and development of 33.1 additional miles of railroad right of way on the North Loop of the trail. Completion of this segment of the multi-use recreational hard surface trail would bring the distance of the Raccoon River Valley Trail System to 89 miles, including a 72 mile loop within it. Additional components of the project include the rehabilitation of existing trail between Panora and Yale; a campground serving Jefferson; depots in Dawson and Minburn to be used as both trailheads and welcome centers; a shower building and camping cabins at Sportsman Park; a restroom facility at the Adel trailhead; acquisition of the historic Redfield Brickyard adjacent to the trail; landscaping trailheads; parking areas; and signage. The addition and enhancement project was estimated at $7,373,881 and $3,429,133 was requested from the Iowa Vision Board. About 46.5% of the request was granted with the $1.6 million CAT award. This award is contingent upon the completion of fund raising in 180 days. That leaves $800,000 for trail advocates to raise against a deadline of 180 days.
