Mayor Boone in chair. Roll call - Fry, Jackson, Carpenter, Mellinger and Durst.
Motion by Mellinger second by Carpenter, that mayor may permit the use of fire crackers in the northeast corner of the city park from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on July third 1909. Approved.
Moved by Mellinger second by Jackson that street lighter place one street lamp on the corner of Barnes and Shaver street approved.

The baseball fellows have at last been able to secure ground for a ball park, D. F. Miller having let them have the use of the former ball diamond in his pasture east of town.
Jeff. G. Yoder and wife are rejoicing over the arrival of a fine boy in their family last Tuesday.
Celia Snider is expected home from Des Moines this week, where she has been attending Highland Park college.
Jos. J. Miller and wife have the sincere sympathy of friends and neighbors, on account of the loss of a little daughter.

Joe Dawson met with a very bad accident Tuesday morning. When going with his horses to S. C. Love's one of the horses became unmanageable, pulling Joe out of the buggy and biting him severely. Drs. Jones and Biglow were called immediately and dressed his wounds.
J. A. Swartzendruber had a barnraising Monday.

Guy Hummer and Perry Livzey are painting for Abe Lackendar this week.
Roy Lackendar is the owner of a fine new buggy.
May and Bert Southwick, Velma Kauffman and Pearl Niffeneggar spent Sunday at the P. G. Bayer home.

Mr. and Mrs. Ed Brown enjoyed a day fishing down on the English river last week.
Mr. and Mrs. Anton Malichky and family attended the band concert at Richmond Saturday evening.
Joe Horak is preparing to build a new barn.
Mr. Joe Escher and Miss Anna TeBockhorst visited at the Vacha home Sunday.
Prairie Flower
The Misses Ella and Clara Faulkner left for Pella Monday where they expect to attend a summer school.
Tessie Bear went to Keota last Friday where she spent several days at the McGraw home.
Mrs. Saville is still in very poor health.

Local news
Mrs. A. T. Winborn underwent an operation in Iowa City for the removal of a cataract from one of her eyes.
Mrs. E. H. Reif attended a shower at the home of Mrs. Leslie Yetter in Iowa City Thursday evening, given in honor of Miss Helen Osborne.
Nancy Miller Gingerich was born Sept. 24th, 1863 in Johnson County, Iowa and died at her late home near Kalona, Iowa, June 17th, 1934 aged 70 years.
8 children remain, Sally, Lucy and Mary at home and Mrs. Merton Miller, Harvey, Joseph and Alva all of the Kalona community and Frank of Upland, California.
Funeral services for Mrs. James Haller were held June 17. Mrs. Haller is survived by her husband, six daughter and one son. The daughters are: Mrs. Cecil Amlong, Wellman; Mrs. Will Duwa, Kalona; Isies, Juanita, Olive and Aledia, at home. The son, Joe, is at home.
Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Coffey of Chicago were Monday afternoon callers at the H. V. Beck and Weller Snyder homes. They were enroute to Wellman to attend the Coffey-Morrison wedding.
Col. Gorge W. Beck, John C. Lemley and John Mapel started Monday to paint the county bridges throughout Washington county. They entered their bid for the job and received the contract.
Mrs. Ed Kern, Neia Ann and Patty Lou, and Miss Cleola Grady spent Thursday with Miss Irma Gingerich at the Jesse Gingerich country home.
The hog market reached the figure of $5 top Monday which was very pleasant news to those who have hogs to sell.
Five of the Kalona Golf members motored to Oskaloosa Sunday where they took part in a golf tournament. Those from here who took part in the contest were R. H. Peterseim, H. V. Beck, Eugene Way, Walter Gingerich and R. E. Adams.

Congratulations are being tendered to another high school graduate, Miss Velma Brenneman, who was married to J. Paul Yoder lat Sunday evening at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Will C. Brenneman.
Mrs. Ada Boller and children are spending some time with her sister, Mrs. L. W. Schwimley and family. Mrs. Boller recently had her tonsils removed.
A talk on "Types of girls" was given by Mac Grout Characteristics of a normal, healthy individual was given by Gladys Hagenbuch. Mabel Yoder and Elizabeth Niffenegger directed the Music.

Lena Krotz of Washington has been helping her sister, Mrs. John Horak can cherries last week.
Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Lantz, Mr. and Mrs. Everett Rodman and Lloyd Lantz visited Sunday night at John Horak's.

Mr. and Mrs. Adwin Gingerich of the Bayertown Community are the proud parents of a new daughter born to them Saturday morning.
The Ladies Aid of the M.E. church will meet with Mrs. Nina Grout Wednesday, June 27th.
The Colored Giants of Iowa City and Bayertown will play Kittenball Friday evening at 6 o'clock.

John V. Gingerich is building a turkey shelter for Harvey Miller.
Mrs. Harvey Miller who has been ill with tonsilities and flu is better.

Richmond
Norma June TeBockhorst entertained relatives and friends at a party June 17, it being her 11th birthday
Farmers are busy trying to keep the chinch bugs from invading the corn fields. Oil is being used, but if good rains do not come soon, the work will do little good, as some corn fields are badly infested already.
The grading of the road south of town will be finished today, June 20.
Pilotburg
Mr. and Mrs. Carl D. Anderson have a new baby son, born at the Washington county hospital last Friday. He is named Carlon Ray.
Will Brown is kept busy drilling wells. Last week he was at Ezra Smith's and then at Earl Smith's near Washington.
Sam Oldfield is some better at this time. His sister, Miss Lizzie Oldfield of Chicago came last night to visit.

Earl Smith shelled corn for C. C. Reeves and Rolland Benson Thursday afternoon.
Chas. Ashby lost a house Monday.
Nearly everyone in this community ready to fight the chinch bugs which are coming this way fast.

Parents of a daughter are Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Nissley, Kalona. The baby, weighing seven pounds, eight and one-half ounces, was born June 22.
Mr. and Mrs. Donald Keiffer of Waterloo are parents of a daughter, Kathy Ann born June 16. She weighted 6 pounds, 9 ounces. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Stransky.
Clair Grout underwent surgery in Iowa City.
Mrs. Amos Hostetler underwent surgery at the Mercy hospital in Iowa City.
Herman Yoder is a patient at Mercy hospital in Iowa City having undergone an emergency appendectomy.
Mrs. Mary Yotty entered Mercy hospital in Iowa City as a medical patient, after having a chicken bone lodge din her throat.
Claudia, Eric and Nancy Shaver, children of Mr. and Mrs. Gail Shaver, underwent tonsillectomies in Iowa City.
Mrs. Ward Liebe Sr. is a surgical patient in Iowa City.
Mrs. I. J. Kelley, who has been a medical patient in Iowa City was brought to the Pleasantview Home Tuesday afternoon, where she will recuperate.
Mrs. James Marner, the former Charleen Gascho, has been honored at recent showers before her marriage on June 20.
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Horesowsky and family and Mrs. Frank Horesowsky and Wilma were entertained at dinner in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Horesowsky and the wedding anniversary of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Jarrard.
Friends of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Miller are invited to attend open house June 28. The occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary.
Last Friday evening Delmar Gingerich was pleasantly surprised by the unexpected visit of his brother, Floyd of Keensburg, Colorado at the parental Ben Gingerich home.
Elaine Hochstetler has accompanied her brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Dickel and son of Iowa City on a vacation trip to Yellowstone National Park.
Jeanette Miller and Sally Skola are attending the All State Music Camp on the State University of Iowa campus for two weeks.
Mr. and Mrs. John Benell, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Bailey, and Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Benell of Lone Tree, attended the wedding of the formers grandson, Gary Benell.
Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Yoder and son will leave June 26 for Newark, Texas, where they will make their home.
R. H. Peterseim, Charles Harland, Joe Levy, Marvin Yoder, and Maurice Westrick left Saturday afternoon for a fishing trip and vacation near Kenora, Canada.

Margaret Patterson gave a talk on "Something to Get Your Teeth Into" and the topic "Foundation Garments" was discussed by Ellen Spenner and Karen Yoder.
Recreation was led by Susie Swartzendruber, after which refreshments were served by Cherie and her mother, Mrs. Floyd Walker.

Mr. Orval Grout is recovering nicely from his recent operation in Iowa City.
Mr. Clair Bailey is vacationing at Spirit Lake this week.
Quite a number from this vicinity attended the Hasting-Ferguson wedding in Iowa City, June 20.
Mr. Richard Sleichter spent a few days last week at the parental Sleichter home. He went to New Jersey after leaving here.
Pilotburg
Mr. Duvall of West Chester brought the new minister, Rev. Chuck Hawn and family formerly of Oakdale, to church Sunday for his first message. Mrs. Hawns name is June and the children are Raymond, Barbara and Walter.
Mrs. Edith Pribyl and Harold of Riverside, Mr. and Mrs. Adoph Larson and Sue Ann McBurney of Olds ate dinner with us Sunday.

Mrs. Glen Sakulin was a supper guest of her sister, Mrs. Leo Grothe and attended a shower for her niece, Caroline Kline at Hills on June 23. Mrs. Clifford Stumpf also attended the shower.
Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Kern received word of the birth of a son to Mr. and Mrs. Ted Onstat of Des Moines on June 12th. She was the former Donna Kern. He has been named Mark William.
Jane Kallaus, RN, returned to her work at the polio and rehabilitation center at the children's hospital.

For Ed Martin and his family the tornado that ripped through their farm June 7 put an end to the family's farm. Every building except the house was taken down "and the house is badly damaged. We are just going to tear it down," Martin said.
But, before the family leaves, they are throwing one last party - an appreciation dinner for all the friends, neighbors and volunteers who rallied to their aid in the wake of the storm.
If Logan Reif ever tosses a rock your way, keep it; it may be worth all the glass in your house. In twenty years of "rockhounding," the veteran collector and his wife, Helen, put together a rock and mineral collection valued into the tens of thousands of dollars. Last week they turned over about half of it to the Kalona Historical Society who will eventually have the entire collection.
Jens Kramer celebrated his eighty-sixth birthday Monday, June 25, with a party at his home. Mr. Kramer won the birthday cake given that day by KCII radio.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert L. Greiner of Keota announce the engagement of their daughter, Brenda Sue, to Kevin C. Flynn, son of Mr. and Mrs .Victor Flynn of West Chester.
Mr. and Mrs. Donald Kref of Iowa City announce the engagement of their daughter, Jacqueline Kay, to Jimmy L. Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilson L. Miller of Kalona.
Timothy A. Ross, son of Clarence H. and Normal J. Ross of Kalona, has been appointed a sergeant in the US Air Force.
Nicole Peterson is among 510 Drake University students named to the Dean's List for the Spring 1984 semester.
Mrs. Shirley Wehr of Richmond presented Mrs. Edith Small an original painting of the area on the Clifford Small farm where the annual rural Life services are held.
Mark Schlabaugh of Kalona will be among 350 artists and craftmen exhibiting work at the 18th annual Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts, July 12-15 at State College, Pennsylvania.
Ron Boyse of Kalona was among three racers who took home the Rexner Trailers trophies June 23, following contest at the Eldon Raceway. Boyse took first place.
Clark Ray Coffman, Yvonne A. Miller and Rhonda Lou Miller of this area were among the 2,576 students named to the Dean's list at Iowa State University for academic excellence during Spring Semester.

Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Beachy are parents of a 6 lb. 12 oz. daughter, Rebecca Joy, born June 21. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Ira Huber of Ontario, Canada, Mr. and Mrs. John Beachy.
Mr. and Mrs. Greg Gaston of Walker, Minnesota, are parents of a daughter, Danyelle Heather, born June 21. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Bob Gaston of Wellman.
Flint Ridge

We attended the 50th wedding anniversary and open house Sunday afternoon in honor of J. Paul and Velma (Brenneman) Yoder. Velma was our school teacher during the early thirtys and taught me the phonics and penmanship while I was in the first and second grade and also gave me my first written tests during the spring of '32 which I shall never forget - however I did pass them. this was at Pacific School Number 9 which was located on the washboards on the west banks of deer Creek about a mile and a half southwest of Joetown or (Amish) Iowa.
We also received a nice note from Carley June (Erb) Miller of the far east and she said that she had just finished reading the last three issues of Kalona news which her supplier who is her sister Shirley had just dropped off for her.
A couple weeks ago we attended a piano recital at the Farmers Savings Bank which was given by the students of Mary Ellen Miller. We enjoyed a nice visit with Raymond and Doris Graber of Trenton, Iowa Sunday afternoon.
Chris Hartzler plays second base and also is a southpaw pitcher at the Kalona Little leagues and Sheila Bender is playing T ball and plays first base at Williamsburg; our grandkids.
