BETHLEHEM - The world according to Julie Clifford and Kelly Kennedy is one filled with chrysanthemums and candles.

The two women, who have worked together for approximately 20 years, own The Flower Shop at 151 Main St. North. The shop opened in May.

Ms. Clifford has more than 30 years of experience in the floral business. She previously owned a local garden center that also served as a floral and gift shop. Ms. Kennedy has 20 years of experience in the business.

"We always worked together," Ms. Kennedy told Voices.

The warmth that comes from two women who have worked alongside each other for years is evident in The Flower Shop. The mood, like the shop, is light and charming.

The windows are covered in airy, white curtains that let in the maximum amount of sunlight. The walls are painted a tan color and the floors are wood. These earthy tones allow the colorful flowers placed around the shop to stand out.

A display set up in the center of the shop changes based on seasons or occasions. In the early summer months, the display was decorated with gifts for teachers, featuring a balloon with the message, "My Teacher Rules," small potted plants and floral arrangements in metal watering cans.

The Flower Shop offers flower arrangements and bouquets for any occasion. Ms. Clifford and Ms. Kennedy do arrangements for weddings, funerals, graduations and private parties, to name a few occasions.

The shop also offers framed art of flowers and gifts for that extra, added something. A display case features jewelry by Allure, and on a nearby wooden table, soy-based Dakota Scents candles, that come in hues of yellow and purple, with scents like lemon pucker and field of dreams.

"We were thinking that we wanted to accommodate people who need to buy gifts," said Ms. Kennedy. "People don't want to leave town on the weekends."

If a customer wants something that The Flower Shop does not carry, they only need to ask Ms. Clifford and Ms. Kennedy.

"If you need it, we'll get it for you," said Ms. Clifford.

The shop offers figurines, such as rabbits and ducks that clutch watering cans. Greetings cards feature photography by Woodbury artist Carol Palmer. The cards are all $3 or less. Framed photographs taken by Ms. Palmer are also for sale at the shop.

New stock is always arriving. Ms. Kennedy said the flowers are always fresh and beautiful.

For those who seek a longer-lasting gift, the shop offers arrangements and wreaths adorned with silk flowers.

The silk flower arrangements and wreaths are some of Ms. Kennedy's favorite projects. Her wreaths hang on the walls of The Flower Shop.

Ms. Clifford loves to do large arrangements. She said she and Ms. Kennedy did the large flower arrangements for a private school's graduation.

The shop offers unique containers for its arrangements. A rustic birdhouse overflowed with yellow daisies and red alstroemeria, also called Peruvian lilies. The alstroemeria are some of Ms. Clifford's favorite flowers because of their longevity.

In the cooler at the back of the shop, long-stem roses provide elegance and spray roses, Ms. Kennedy's favorite, provide whimsy. Buckets of snapdragons and white, dark and light pink carnations are clustered next to the cooler.

The Flower Shop has potted plants, perennials, hanging baskets and annuals. Because of their experience at garden centers and a childhood that included gardening, Ms. Clifford and Ms. Kennedy can help customers with their home gardens.

"We can tell people what to plant where," said Ms. Kennedy.

Ms. Clifford said she and Ms. Kennedy love to help customers and have creative ideas. When the women heard about a wedding taking place on Halloween, they immediately began coming up with ideas.

One idea was to line a walkway with white, shelled-out sugar pumpkins containing flower arrangements.

Meeting customers' needs is one of Ms. Clifford and Ms. Kennedy's primary goals. Because Ms. Clifford owns the Curves facility that is right next door to The Flower Shop, and in the same parking lot, early and late pick-ups are accommodated.

For Ms. Clifford and Ms. Kennedy, helping the customer is the greatest part of the business.

"I love helping people and making them happy," said Ms. Clifford. "I like to watch their faces when you make them something."

The Flower Shop is open 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays.

Special requests may be made by telephone from 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Those seeking additional information may call 203-266-7494.
