The department in part used a utility vehicle and Zodiac Rescue Boat to rescue four occupants. About a dozen firefighters assisted in the operation, which took less than an hour.
Wethersfield Volunteer Ambulance was on standby, but there were no injuries, Thompson said.
Thompson said he is not sure what led the boat to begin taking on water but he said the boaters were wearing life preservers. He said it is still a good opportunity to remind people to approach boating cautiously and realize that the town's smaller ponds and watercourses can be just as dangerous as the "bigger" bodies of water such as the Cove and Connecticut River.
"You can get in as much trouble on one of these as you can a larger body of water," Thompson said.
He urged boaters to be educated, ensure that their life-saving devices are up to date and if necessary, look up the boating safety tips and classes offered by the State Department of Environmental Protection at www.CT.gov/DEP.
