The Kiwanis Club of Glendale honored “everyday heroes” from the community on May 28, recognizing people who go above and beyond their duty to help the area.
“We chose people from the community who do special things outside of the ordinary,” said Joe Aiello, president of the Glendale Kiwanis.

Award winners include Steve Hansen, a student who collected thousands of cans to raise funds to put a new gym floor in Sacred Heart School in Glendale, and Sister Jean de Sales, who has dedicated her time to helping seniors.
In total, 21 people received the Everyday Hero Award, as well as a proclamation from state Sen. Joseph Addabbo Jr. (D-Howard Beach) and a citation from Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley (D-Middle Village).
In addition the Kiwanis also gave out President’s Awards to two members who deserved special recognition. Those awards went to John Benitez, general manager of the California Pizza Kitchen, and Peter Facciabene, co-owner of Shiro of Japan, where the award ceremony was held. Both restaurants are located in the Shops at Atlas Park.
“Without batting an eye, they step up to the plate to help the community,” Aiello said.
Recipients of the Everyday Heroes Award, in addition to those above, are Jerry Wilkat, Robert Kraker, Jack Zwerenz, Cheryl Marsh, Antonino Arrigo, Robert Holden, Tony Nunziato, Virginia Paterson-Grant, Francis Stock, Caryn Michaeli, Damion DePass, Kingsley Garner, Dennis Rogers, Brian Wagner, Robert Pullano, George Schwille, Bob Kueber and Aiello.
