Since then the group has given away more than $1,960,500 to more than 2,242 students.
Most of the awards were given to Wethersfield High School seniors but the scholarships are open to any high school senior who lives in town.
In addition to the awards presentation, the night included brief comments from a number of school and community leaders, including organization president Heather Loranger, Deputy Mayor Paul F. Montinieri, Board of Education Vice Chairwoman Julie L. Montinieri, Superintendent of Schools Michael Kohlhagen and Wethersfield High School Principal Thomas Moore. Vicki Huffman, director of Children's Ministry at First Church of Christ offered the benediction.
In addition to funds the organization raises through its own events, many of the scholarships are supported by local residents, business, school groups, foundations and others. Many are also given in memory of someone the community has lost.
Julie Montinieri conveyed similar thoughts and said the board thanked the community, parents and the seniors. She said students may roll their eyes at their parents' attention but do appreciate it deep down.
"I congratulate all of you and let you know how pleased and proud your whole community is," she said.
Kohlhagen also thanked the students and the community.
"Everyone in this community has invested so much in each of our seniors," said Kohlhagen, who added that many of the awards are steeped in meaning and come with a lot of responsibility."
