Decoration day was appropriately observed Monday, under the auspices of the W.R.C. Schools were dismissed, business houses ere closed.
June the 6th is Dedication Sunday for the Methodist church. Dr. Stafford of Oskaloosa preaches at 10:30 a.m.
Louck & Bochme are doing a nice business in automobiles this year. They have sold fourteen machines so far.
The Kalona House has as good accommodations as most of the city hotels. If you want to treat your friends right, take them there.
One of M.J. Miller's little boys lost the first joint of a finger in a lawn mower accident a few weeks ago.
Hulda Marie Buel was born in Lockport, New York, June 25th, 1827, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A. D. Shaw, near Kalona May 30th, 1909.
She came to Iowa with her parents in the year 1839, settling in Iowa City, there being but four log cabins there at the time.
Rex Louck came home this morning, his years work in Iowa College being done.
J. W. Southwick shipped a carload of good hogs to Chicago Tuesday. Jesse went along with the shipment and on his way back from Chicago will stop off at Davenport.
D. F. Miller is having a lot of tiling done in his field just east of town.
W. S. Mitchell, former Kalona school teacher can't take care of all the good things offered him. Council Bluff's offered him $2000 a year to come there, but he had bought property in Clinton.
Frank Snider is playing snare drum in the band and they say he is going to make a good one.

Our Academy students of Iowa City spent Monday at home. On Friday evening of this week will be their graduation exercise. Omar Yoder is one of the graduates and he is also valedictorian of the class.
This community was saddened last Wednesday evening by a message from Zearing, telling of the death of Lois Mullen, the cause being consumption.

The ent worms seem to be playing havoc with the young corn in this as well as other localities. Some of the farmers have planted their corn the second time.
School at Union and Prairie Flower closed Friday for the summer vacation.
Mrs. Saville is quite ill at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Will Palmer.

Mr. and Mrs. John Marner are entertaining new twin girls at their home in Iowa County, being born to them last Saturday, May 26th. They will answer to the names of Lois Gayle and Lucille Grace. The Marners live in the West Union neighborhood.
With Dr. Harry D. Henry reading the single ring service, Miss Vera Davis and Mr. Earl Kennard were united in marriage at the parsonage in Iowa City. Mrs. Kennard is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Davis of Union township. Mr. Kennard is on the son of Mrs. Frank Kennard of Oxford. He graduated from the Kalona high school in 1932.
Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Teets, Mrs. Nellie Edmondson and Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Reif enjoyed a picnic dinner at the Iowa City park in company with Mr. and Mrs. R. V. Manatt, the Helen Osborne and Helen Robinson, and Logan Reif. The occasion was to celebrate the birthdays of Mr. Manatt, E. H. Reif and Mr. Teets.
Thursday noon, May 24th, Mrs. L. O. Gingerich pleasantly surprised her daughter, Louella, on her birthday by inviting in four of her girl friends for dinner. The guests were Elva Bender, Ruth and Mildred Thatcher, and Dorothy Votruba.
Miss Lala Hochstetler was pleasantly surprised at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Chris Hochstetler, when friends came in to help her celebrate her birthday, May 29.
Mr. and Mrs. Herb Beachy and Rosemary in company with Miss Alma Miller and Frank Speidel of Iowa City picnicked along the Wapsipinicon River.
On June 5th, there will be a piano recital presented by the pupils of Catherine Friese Walker. Students are Richard Snodgrass, Paul Fry, John Nayadley, Donald Hesselschwerdt, Gloria Nayadley, Jean Fry, Mary Grady, Alfred Grady, Treva Hesselschwerdt, Carolyn Fry, Jane Kallaus, Charles Snodgrass.

Gordon Miller, Stanley Plank, Omar Hochstedler, Emery Rhodes, and Jacob Swartzendruber returned home Tuesday night from Goshen, Indiana where they had been visiting the past week.
Mr. and Mrs. John Stutzman and Mr. and Mrs. Chris Gingerich were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Art Gingerich of Wellman.

Mr. and Mrs. Chester Miller are the happy parents of their first born, a seven pound son, born to them last Saturday. He will answer to the name of Arlen Dale. Both Mrs. Miller and son are getting along fine. Mr. and Mrs. Jake P. Miller and family and Mr. and Mrs. Jacob B. Yoder, called to see the new grandchildren Sunday.
Vern Moore is building a new barn and fence.

Several of the farmers are putting in soy beans. Pastures are very dry and needing rain badly.
Mrs. Carl D. Anderson had a few little girls come to help Wenona celebrate her 5th birthday Sunday afternoon. They were Clara Belle Turnipseed, Antoneete Fisher, Betty Joann Gilbert, and Eileen Kennard.
Last Saturday evening about midnight, Mrs. Esther Hamilton's brooder house with 600 chicks burned. The oil stove had been giving trouble, but she thought it was repaired. The light glared into her room awakening her. She gave an alarm over the telephone and some help came.

Miss Arlys Myers spent several days last week at the Raymond Hasty home.

This is the last edition of school news that will appear in the Kalona News for this school year. It has been a pleasure to write the notes that the public was invited to read each week.
Now that our play is over we added up the amount taken in and found the total to be $79.90.
Ned and Jim M. Proved to be very good help over at the hall Monday morning for they were fooling around and the committee put them to work peeling spuds.
Well, school is over and I will have no more chatter to write. What I'm really trying to say is Toodle Loo, So-Long, Good bye, Adios.
The Kalona grades played Middleburg in baseball Thursday afternoon. Curtis Figgins was pitcher and captain of our team. Earl Hershberger was umpire and Bert Southwick base umpire. The final score was 16 to 4 in favor of Kalona.

Mr. and Mrs. Eli S. Miller, Sara, Shirley, Ellis and Gary left Tuesday for Sarasota, Florida where they will attend the wedding of their son and brother, Paul on June 6.
Miss Charleen Gascho, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Gascho, Connie Hershberger, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul J. Hershberger and Phyllis Semler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Semler are in the graduating class of students at the mercy hospital school of Nursing.
M. B. Ehrenfelt is recuperating with a broken wrist and bruises after having fallen at his home, while shingling a roof.
Mrs. Dennis M. Miller and Marlene Garber were honored at a surprise birthday party June 2 in the Miller home, when neighbors gathered for a wiener roast and supper. Those sharing the occasion with the honored guests were Dennis M. Miller, Eddie, Judy and Dennie, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Garber.
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Chody and Randy and Mrs. Lyle Fry were in Muscatine Sunday. Mrs. Chody's sister Karen Bermel is a member of the 1959 graduating class.
AC Ronald Spicher, who has been stationed at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas is enjoying a two weeks visit with his mother, Mrs. Velma Spicher.
The Kalona Softball league will start the 1959 summer season on Tuesday evening, June 8 at 7:45.

Officer Fry nearly hit by speeding car
Edwin G. Ropp was sentenced in Mayors court Monday to 30 days in the county jail for reckless driving.
Other fines: Robert Lee Miller was fined $12.50 for having a loud muffler, and Joseph Mahlon Gingerich was fined $17.50 for speeding.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Welte Sr., and Richard Welte of Richmond will leave Wednesday for Denver, Colorado where they will visit with their daughters and husbands: Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Knoll and family and Mr. and Mrs. L. D. Perkins.
Louise Kallaus returned to her home Friday after staying with Mrs. Norman Kallaus at the Mayo Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.

Linda Russell, alias Liz, is one of the shortest members of the senior class. February 10, 1941, was the lucky day for her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Russell. At present she stands at 5 ft. 2 in. weighs 110 pounds, and has black curly hair. She is secretary of student council, treas. Of F. H. A., and was an attendant to the homecoming queen and was a first team cheerleader.
School-wise, her favorite subjects are typing and Government. Football is her favorite sport and is an avid S. U. I. football fan. Her favorite actor and actress are Marlon Brando and Susan Hayward, respectively. Fats Domino tops her favorite male singer list and Connie Frances rates No. 1 in the female bracket.

Carol Brenneman, daughter of Keith and Mary L. Brenneman, has returned home after studying at the University of Barcelona, Spain.
Shirley Wehr of Richmond took a first place award for her pencil drawing in the Lenten Art display at the First Presbyterian Church in Ottumwa.

Don and Betty Saforek of Davenport and Dorothy Salladay of Iowa City were Sunday evening luncheon guests at the Blanche Saforek home. In the afternoon they attended the 130th year anniversary celebration of Holy Trinity.
