Memorial Day activities announced

Starke vets gather at park
Bradford County Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1016 and American Legion Post 56 and their Ladies Auxiliary invite the public to their annual Memorial Day ceremony, Monday, May 25.
The ceremony to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defending their country will begin at 8 a.m. at Starke City Hall. From the parking lot, there will be a short promenade to Charlie Schaefer Veterans Memorial Park on East Call Street.
Guest speaker will be Bradford County Veterans Service Officer Linda Carpenter, and a representative will from Rep. Cliff Stearns office will make a presentation from the congressman to the city of Starke.

KH American Legion sells poppies
The Keystone Heights American Legion Post 202 and Auxiliary will sell Memorial Day poppies on Saturday, May 23. The traditional poppies will be available at Hitchcock's and Harveys in Keystone Heights. Proceeds from the sales will benefit America's veterans.

KH Jaycees hold weekend fish fry
The Keystone Heights Jaycees are holding a Memorial Day weekend fish fry Saturday, May 23, from 11 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. at the Keystone Heights Shrine Club, 5593 S.E. Third Ave., behind the BP station in Bradford County.
Fish dinners are $7 for adults and $5 for children under 12. The menu includes fried fish, french fries, grits, coleslaw, hush puppies, iced tea and coffee. Take out available.

Historic Melrose plans weekend concert
Historic Melrose Inc. is planning a Memorial Day weekend dinner and free concert on Sunday, May 24, in Historic Melrose Park.
Blue Water Bay will provide boxed dinners for $20 at 6 p.m. Seating for the dinner is limited so purchase tickets in advance if possible. Tickets will also be available at the event.
Grammy winner Will Barrow and the Nashville All-stars will perform in the park at 7:30 p.m. Proceeds will benefit Historic Melrose Inc. and the Heritage Park Fund.
Camp Blanding plans observance
Camp Blanding's Historical Museum plans a Memorial Day observance with a 21-gun salute and "Taps" on Monday, May 25, at 10 a.m. The speaker will be Brig. Gen. (Ret.) Wally Green, Air National Guard.

MD observed at Melrose cemetery
The Melrose Cemetery Association will present a Memorial Day observance at the Melrose-Eliam Cemetery on Monday, May 25, at 10 a.m. Retired Navy Chief Joseph Perry will be guest speaker, with additional activities planned.
The cemetery is located at 821 S.R. 21 North outside Melrose.

AMVETS plans Memorial Day fish fry
AMVETS Post 86 in Keystone Heights will celebrate Memorial Day on Monday, May 25, with a service at noon featuring Rolling Thunder riders. The service is followed by a fish fry at 1 p.m. Fish dinners with trimmings will be $6.
Hot Rod Lincoln will perform from 2-6 p.m. The public is invited.
The AMVETS Post is located at 6685 Brooklyn Bay Road in Keystone Heights.

Lake Butler plans Memorial Day
A Memorial Day ceremony will be held in Lake Butler on Monday, May 25, at 10 a.m. at the Union County Veterans Monument located next to the Masonic Lodge at 325 W. Main St. in Lake Butler.
The Union County High School JROTC honor guard will place the American flag at half-mast, lay the wreath at the memorial and perform a 21-gun salute followed by "Taps."
Patriotic music and a guest speaker will be featured. The names of awarded Union County soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen, living and deceased, will be recited.
Following the ceremony, the Union County Historical Museum will open. Charles Thornton will be an honored guest at the memorial museum until 1 p.m. Thornton is a 1967 UCHS grad, former Raiford resident and recipient of a Silver Star, two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart for service in Vietnam.
