Law enforcement converged on Casey following the report of a drive-by shooting about 4 p.m. last Wednesday afternoon. After investigation, the Guthrie County sheriff's department announced the next day the story had been fabricated. A shooting did occur and the sheriff's office determined the victim, a 17-year-old, had provided false information to law enforcement. The victim admitted that he made up a story about a drive-by shooting when he actually was shot with a pellet gun at a residence in Casey. The 15-year-old male juvenile shooter and his mother came forward and the youth confessed to what happened. The juvenile victim then confirmed he fabricated the story. According to the sheriff's office, the victim is being charged with providing false information to law enforcement and the shooter is being charged with serious assault. Other charges still are pending in this case. The 911 call received by the Guthrie County sheriff's office stated a 17-year-old male was shot in the back in Casey. Officers from the Guthrie County sheriff's office, Adair County sheriff's office and the Iowa State Patrol responded to the call. The initial report was the juvenile was walking down the street when an unknown older, dirty, dark colored, 4 door car pulled up and fired a shot at him. The juvenile was struck in the lower back with a small calibre projectile. He was transported to the Guthrie County Hospital and later Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. At that time he was reported to be in stable condition.
