Letter from California, May 8, 1934
I was a very small boy, but I distinctly remember seeing the first depot built, the first rails laid, and the first passenger train to reach Kalona on the BCR & N railway. In later years I knew Emma Allen, the first Editor, she who established "THE KALONA NEWS," read the first copy of the press, was a subscriber for many years, and still have a tender spot in my heart for the dear old town and the friends of my youth. And if it is convenient for such friends to write I should be delighted to hear from one and all.

Among the souvenirs that Mayor Ben Boone of Kalona prizes is a silver dollar made in the year 1879.
It is an anniversary dollar for Ben as 1879 is he year Kalona was started and also the year that the Boones moved to Kalona from Frytown and started a store and boarding house. Ben wouldn't part with it for a good bit." Unquote.
